Call your reps saying you’re not happy with the new bill, donate to the ACLU if you can, and call Microsoft’s customer support line to complain about their new TOS.

“Call Microsoft Customer Service direct – 1-800-642-7676 – hours 5 AM til 9 PM PST time (USA) – Saturday and Sunday, 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM PST time (USA). In Canada, call (877)568-2495.”

not even gonna pretend this is the single most urgent issue on my radar right now, but also I am incredibly not pleased with this New Puritan norm-shifting initiative; I for one prefer in a world where the infrastructure isn’t coercively G-rated.

What the actual fuck?

this TOS goes into effect May 1 and finally there’s some contact info here so YELL AT THEM YALL. this is censorship. microsoft already had provisions against slander and hate speech and sex trafficking; this is just puritanical bullshit.

if you want to switch away from MS Office, here’s libreoffice and openoffice for your productivity needs. (libreoffice lets you save as .docx, which is useful for assignments and such, while openoffice doesn’t. both let you save as PDF.)

the bill mentioned above (because i missed it on my first read of this post) is SESTA, or FOSTA-SESTA. here’s a good article explaining some of the factors and downsides. here’s one on FOSTA from the electronic freedom foundation. here’s one that goes into more legal detail. be informed. talk to your reps. fuck this.

I haven’t seen any comments on this here yet, and I’m sort of surprised. This, combined with news that, apparently, Microsoft is going to be ‘cracking down’ on ‘offensive language’ in all of their products ( SF CBS ) is deeply worrying.

Both of these stem from the recent SESTA/FOSTA bill that passed both houses of Congress.

FFS…

They’d likely face the hard choice of either supercensorship (yank anything users say or post that seems even remotely likely to pose legal risk) or just abandoning the startup project altogether. (Internet-law experts refer to this as “the moderator’s dilemma.”) A would-be Facebook killer wouldn’t be able to compete by being a better Facebook—the best it could aim for is to be a better Prodigy. Prodigy, the original “walled garden” of online services, was an early competitor among online companies, with its forums highly moderated by its staff—you couldn’t post your content publicly on the service without subjecting your postings to screening by Prodigy editors. Unsurprisingly, Prodigy in its original form didn’t do well in the long run competing initially with more open, less moderated services like AOL and CompuServe or, ultimately, with the offerings of the wide-open internet itself.

On vacation I read HONOR GIRL by Maggie Thrash, a graphic memoir coming next month from Candlewick. It’s about a girl at a Christian summer camp falling for a camp counselor, an older girl. I was so captivated by the story and the illustrations – it had just the right combination of humor, honesty, and the rush of first love. Highly recommended! Not quite a coming out story so much as a coming to realization story (which felt so real to me), very well done.

Evan Rachel Wood, Gina Rodriguez to Star in Miranda July Heist Feature

Evan Rachel Wood, Gina Rodriguez, Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger will star in the heist feature from indie filmmaker Miranda July.

The script centers on a woman named Old Dolio, whose life is turned upside down when her parents, amateur con artists, invite an outsider to join their biggest heist yet. Wood is Old Dolio, while Jenkins and Winger are the shady parents who are confronted by the mistakes of their poor parenting. Rodriguez is the woman who learns of the family’s secrets and is brought into the fold.

This sounds good and how exciting to have Debra Winger back on screen?

anyway jeff bezos could eradicate homelessness. he could literally give each homeless person 100k and it would only take less than .5% of his entire wealth. what the actual god giving fuck

Why do you think they deserve it

Well shelter is a basic need, and would at the very least allow them a place where they can get back on their feet. Food water and shelter are necessary for a healthy body and psychology. There’s also the fact that they’re people too, and a little help goes a long way in making a decent community. There’s plenty of reasons

Yeah they need stuff, but why does every homeless person deserve 0.5% of someone’s income

You have five hundred apples, and just one day to eat them all.

You pass by a small crowd of hungry children, and decide you’d rather 455 apples go rotten than give them to some snotty brat who isn’t your problem.

It doesn’t matter how hard you’ve worked for your 500 apples, or that you aren’t the parent of any of those kids. in the moment you decide to walk away, it doesn’t matter why they’re hungry, or who owes who what.

You had the opportunity to help people, you had the ability to help people, you had the resources to help people. You had everything you needed to make a small, tiny little difference in someone’s life, and you decided not to.

What are you going to buy in your lifetime that’s worth more to you than your own humanity?
