having homosexual relations means you will burn in Hell

Worth it

Hell’s where the party is

Everyone has homosexual relations. We all have a gay cousin, a lesbian aunt, a bisexual grandmother.

Guess what, brother bigot? You’ve got a one-way ticket to lava land.

Fortunately, being the homosexual relation exempts you from all the nonsense and you get to spend eternity enjoying all the Broadway musicals you never got to see and read as much fan fiction as you want.

With all the heat Anita Sarkeesian gets for her Tropes series, you’d think it was a new topic, but Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert had a discussion on a similar theme when they were talking about the influx of slasher movies on their show in 1980.

34 years later and this is STILL relevant

always reblog

Hollywood still has too much to atone for.  The dominance of white males in that system is still largely unchallenged and we still have too many films and television programmes that cater largely to white male audiences.  This dominance has always been a reflection of – and a social assist to – white male superiority in society.

So long as audiences pay to see the latest white male hero and stay away from films with diverse casting, POC, especially women, nothing changes.

Films like Ghostbusters, Hidden Figures and Get Out make in-roads, but we’re also on our fifth Jack Sparrow outing no one asked for and another Spiderman no one asked for and another Thor film,  etc –  will be out soon.  This is the dominant form.

Go see Wonder Woman. See it twice.  Tune out the hundreds of white male hero dramas on telly, support shows with diverse casting and diverse production teams.  We really don’t need another James Bond or Ethan Hunt or Jason Bourne or King Arthur or Game of Thrones.  It’s been done.  White hero stereotypes are done. Violence against women and minorities as entertainment – backward and more than done.  Move on, move forward.

Without progress, we keep spinning our wheels in the same rut and look at society – no better.  Our art should reflect the depth and breadth of what we are and can be – not cater to the egotistical, sexist, racist demands of the needy few.

i feel like all medieval dramas have been low key ruined by game of thrones because now the showrunners believe all viewers just want gratuitous violence, soft corn porn sex scenes and exaggerated sexism

Things I want more of in medieval dramas:

– Culture! I want to see art and books! I want to hear music! Show me the Minnesänger, you cowards!

– Scholarship! I want to see people learning the ways of scholasticism in universities and having discussions on philosophy, medicine, law, etc. If a series takes place in Italy, I want to see the Schola Medica Salernitana, and the fact that women studied there too.

– Speaking of women, I want to see women who abided by traditional gender roles being shown as badass too. Medieval women don’t need to pick up a sword to be interesting and worthy of respect. After all, when the men were at war, who ran everything? Their wives.

– Also, the ladies had body hair and didn’t wear modern makeup.

– Humour! People had fun then too. I think the manuscripts that feature apes with butt trumpets are a testament to that.

– People not turning their longbows sideways to shoot. Seriously. That is a shitty way to shoot a bow.

– Peasants NOT being shown as completely filthy and having horrible teeth. Sure they didn’t have modern dentistry or showers, but people had other ways of keeping clean. They definitely had worn teeth because the foods they ate weren’t as soft as they are nowadays, but decay was only a problem later on when sugar was more available.

Minor correction: I have just been informed that noble ladies DID in fact have hair removal.

Schola Medica Salernitana, woo! I co-sign all of this, and add that I would like to see more

– Trade! I watched Pillars of the Earth with a bunch of other medievalists and we all got super-excited about the wool trade. Long-distance trade and complex markets were a thing!

– Relatedly, cultural exchange! As a thing that was normal!

– Crafts and industry! Show me beer-brewing! Public ovens! Smithing! Weaving! Apothecaries!

– People with hilarious distinguishing surnames/nicknames. Far too uncommon in medieval-set drama

– Complex religious cultures, interactions between religious and lay institutions/authorities, etc.

– Also, complex, nuanced relationships between belief, unbelief, and inconsistent beliefs, please and thank you

Yes!!! Just less violence for shock value, way less violence against women, and just more female characters in general. Oh, and some diversity would be good too.

Queer people existed and it would be nice to see them portrayed as something other than fops who get thrown out of windows.

Also: you don’t have to set it in Europe or faux-Europe with pale-skinned people.

Guy’s…. Is this going to destroy Tumblr?

If it does, a) it will have been worth it, b) it will be a fitting legacy for a man who hated shoddy workmanship. 😀
