Guys, I’m not going to ask for your prayers – I myself am not religious, but I am going to ask you to signal boost this. Marawi City in the Philippines has been invaded by ISIS, they are bombing the city and a school zone, and setting detainees free from prisons.
They say that this is a jihad, but anyone who even has a small understanding of Islam knows that Islam is not violent.
This is terrorism.
The world needs to know.
Update 1: They’re exchanging fire from both sides. Electricity is down. Friends are reporting that ISIS members are spotted in the schools and are giving them a few minutes to evacuate before they take over. Filipino media is silent.
Update 2: Christian teachers are being held hostage.
Update 3: Hospital staff being detained, ISIS flag has been raised in the city hospital. The fighting occurred not in the outskirts of Marawi, but on its streets, around the city hall and public market.
I’m sorry, I’m stringing together what information my friends are still giving me. I don’t know how long they can keep this up – a lot of them are saying that their phones are dying.
Update 4: Armed Forces of the Philippines telling people to go underground, airstrikes coming. Mortars are being prepared too.
UPDATE 5: The Philippine President and his family are in Russia. The Palace remains silent. The military is trying to invalidate ground reports to cover up their fuckups.
UPDATE 6: Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines are not responding or have deployed extremely delayed support, according to the Marawi City Mayor in a phone interview.
UPDATE 7: CNN Philippines has a livestream covering the entire thing, eyewitness reports are in, Military is still saying “we’re in full control” when that’s obviously not the case.
UPDATE 8: reports in that terrorists are targeting cell towers now.
UPDATE 9: GENERALS POINTING FINGERS AT EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE.

Thousands gather in Manchester and across the UK to pay tributes to those who lost their lives and the families affected after a terrorist attack after an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester. Many of the victims were children, and the youngest confirmed dead was only 8 years old.

The TARDIS, the Starship Enterprise, and the Millennium Falcon are the usual suspects for the top spots in any favorites list of classic science fiction spacecraft. But the USSC Discovery One, the principle spacecraft from both the movie and the novel “2001: A Space Odyssey,” while far from obscure, perhaps doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
Hard sci fi doesn’t get much harder than the Discovery. A lack of waste heat-radiating fins is one of the few concessions that were made in the ship’s design out of concern audiences might mistake the fins for wings and think the spaceship was built to operate in an atmosphere.
From her nuclear propulsion system to the crew centrifuge that slowly rotated inside the spherical front section of the ship to generated “artificial gravity,” the vast majority of Discovery’s design was grounded in real-world science and engineering. Even the hibernacula that allowed some of the crew to remain in hypersleep for much of the mission, while more speculative, isn’t an unreasonable extrapolation of where technology might get us in the future.
And while Apple’s Siri isn’t as sophisticated – or as homicidal – as HAL 9000, we have moved in the direction 2001 predicted in terms of voice recognition and artificial intelligence even if we’re not as far along that path as 1968 imagined we would be.
Discovery One won’t let you tour the galaxy, but if you want to move around the solar system in comfort, albeit at a slow pace by typical sci fi spaceship standards, Discovery will not only get you there, but it will do so in a way that probably comes much closer to how real world spacecraft of the future will operate than the typical sci fi space vessel.

Giving Blood
The NHS Blood Donation Service
has confirmed that it has sufficient stocks of blood for hospital
patients, and is not in need of extra donations; is discouraging people
from turning up to donate without an appointment in response to the
Manchester bombing; and has requested that people refrain from sharing inaccurate messages calling for emergency blood donations on social media. (People with pre-existing appointments to donate are encouraged to attend at the arranged time.)
Missing People
There have been numerous posts asking for people to spread photographs of individuals ostensibly missing in the aftermath of the bombing. Whilst some are genuine, many are actually hoax posts originally created by trolls (Buzzfeed has collated a list of several examples here, and there are more in circulation).
Before reblogging a “missing person” photo, please do your utmost to verify the facts, rather than automatically reposting it and so contributing towards clogging up channels and confusing/obscuring genuine cases of missing people being sought.
Responsibility for the Attack
GMP state that the attacker died at the scene after detonating an IED. They have been identified, but their name has not been released at the time of writing. Another
person has been arrested in connection with the attack. That is all we know as
yet. Whilst IS/Isis/Isil/Daesh has claimed responsibility, note that a) they have a habit
of jumping to claim responsibility for terrorist actions whether these are of their making or not; and b) even if the attack has been committed in their name, it does not necessarily mean
that this was a planned and co-ordinated strike on their part rather than a lone perpetrator.
Religious Scapegoating
Leaders representing different faiths also condemned the attack.
Harun Khan, the secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain,
said: “This is horrific, this is criminal. May the perpetrators face the
full weight of justice both in this life and the next.” The bishop of Manchester, David Walker, said faith leaders in the
city were united. “The guilt for last night belongs to the perpetrators
and the perpetrators alone – it doesn’t go beyond them,” he told BBC
Radio 4’s Today programme. [x]
People of all faiths and none have been helping those affected. They ran into the venue after the explosion to assist. Taxi drivers have been providing free rides to people, as have delivery drivers. They have been opening their homes, workplaces, and places of worship or community to offer shelter. They have been providing food, water, and other supplies. They have been offering their professional medical skills. They have been working as part of the emergency services. They have been supporting the emergency services. They have been doing anything they can to assist.
Those who commit such atrocities – in the name of any ideology – want to shatter the bonds of community described above. They want to splinter society. They want us to turn on each other, to distrust each other, to scapegoat each other, in order to exploit the resulting disaffectation for their own means.
A terrorist group has taken over parts/if not all of Marawi City in the Philippines. Reports are saying the group has raised the flag of Daesh (ISIS) in front of the public hospital.
Keep the people of Marawi and the Philippines in your thoughts and prayers too if you can!
Update: locals are saying that the Marawi City jail is under ISIS control and that all detainees were released. Official word from the government is that these operations were initiated by government forces but civilians in the area remain to be in the dark of what’s happening.

The local media are NOT covering this. The military released a vague statement saying they were already in the area due to intel about a possible attack.
On the ground civilians are LIVE TWEETING AND POSTING PHOTOS on social media that CONTRADICT the military’s statements.
ISIS have taken over the city. Colleges and establishments are being burnt. People are being kept within the city and according to locals, the AFP have been pushed back by the terrorist forces.
User @shidik on Twitter posted that the ISIS group seems to have withdrawn after setting several places on fire. Still no word from the press, the military, or the President.
Chief of Marawi Police has allegedly been beheaded, along with other individuals including teachers and an ambulance driver. Firetrucks and ambulances have been siezed/destroyed. NO FUCKING WORD FROM THE GOVERNMENT.
They’re talking to several people on the ground. City mayor confirms the lack of response from the military and national police.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines has supposedly issued a 5 HOUR ULTIMATUM before they bomb Marawi City. CIVILIANS ARE BEING HELD INSIDE THE CITY BC THE ISIS GROUP BLOCKED ALL ENTRANCE/EXITS AND HAVE TAKEN CONTROL OVER THE MAIN HIGHWAY.
Also: President Duterte was confirmed to be pushing through his Russia trip amidst the terrorist attack in Marawi.
