“I swear fealty to you, Clarke kom Skaikru”

“I swear fealty to you, Clexa. I promise to never get over you, to watch all your scenes on YouTube periodically, and regularly create new cracky content, treating the needs of the fandom as my own.”

May Clexas endure as Xenites have – through feast and famine (especially famine) and, one day, may both rejoice in a revival/reboot that gets it right.

May the Crack never cease.

Lexa betraying Clarke on the Mountain makes absolutely no sense and I am 100% not referring to her feelings for Clarke. I’m saying that from a tactical stand point, Lexa made the worst possible decision by simply leaving the Mountain. Lexa is an intelligent leader, talented soldier, and brilliant tactician. She would need to be for her to unite 12 warring clans under her banner. Those warrior cultures would not allow someone who didn’t know anything about war, tactics, or fighting to lead their armies. In canon, Lexa is shown to be a shrewd, intelligent leader who can inspire both fear and hope in her warriors and people.

So someone who is so smart and has the tentative trust of 12 societies in her hands would not make such a terrible tactical decision at the climax of the battle as there is only one of two results that can come from her making the deal.

One, which was probably the most likely scenario in Lexa’s mind, is the Mountain Men successfully capturing the necessary amount of Skaikru and harvesting their bone marrow, which obviously means killing them. This is giving the Grounder’s greatest enemy the one thing they didn’t have before the war, which was agency. The Mount Weather Fortress was both a blessing and a curse to Lexa’s people. Sure, the Grounders couldn’t get inside of it, but it was a prison for the Mountain Men. They could not leave it without their suits and oxygen tanks. This severely limited their mobility while Lexa and her army had the freedom to move around wherever necessary to fight.

Lexa now has the ability to make it inside the Mountain, thanks to the truce and technology of the Skaikru. She has eliminated the greatest obstacle in her path to defeat the Mountain Men and free her people from their reign of terror. But by accepting this deal, she is handing her greatest enemy, on a silver platter, the ability to permanently leave their prison without any fear of radiation poisoning. Lexa is not naive. She would know that the Mountain Men would need land to build their new civilization on and that they already think of her and her people as savages, as less than human, as expendable. She knows they would leave their fortress and then kill and/or forcibly move her people from their homes. This would mean more of her people would be killed, certainly more than the number of those who had been trapped in the mountain that she had saved.

The second scenario would be that the Skaikru (which ends up happening) somehow defeat the Mountain Men. This is almost worse than the first scenario because Lexa has, through betrayal, created a new enemy for her people, one who would now have access to the safety of the fortress, its technology and weapons, and the Skaikru would not be restricted to Mount Weather since they do not get radiation poisoning. And she just gave them a perfect reason to hate and distrust her.

There could possibly be a third scenario, however quite unlikely, in which the Mountain Men and Skaikru simply destroy each other, but that would only eliminate a small portion of the Skaikru, allowing the majority of them to plot their revenge against Lexa and her people if they wished to.

So her making this decision to take the deal offered by the Mountain Men makes no sense. I understand that she is being weighed down heavily by the guilt from sacrificing all those people in Ton DC, but she tells Clarke that she is making this deal with her head and not her heart. In no way is her taking that deal logical or good for her people in the long run. I admit that it’s good drama and it sets up a juicy obstacle for her and Clarke to overcome in the next season, but it makes Lexa look unintelligent and that she doesn’t know what she’s doing.

Former military officer, military operations planner, and doctrinally-trained military academy graduate here.

*cracks knuckles* Let’s talk hypothetical military strategy here. All in fun, nothing personal here. And also, hopefully I’m not too fuzzy on remembering the sequence of plot events 🙂

Actually, Lexa leaving Clarke at the Mountain is strategically and tactically the best option to her with the resources and military intelligence she has at the time. She essentially has three options available to her before the military campaign:

Option 1: Do nothing.

As awful as it is, Mount Weather and its inhabitants are a known entity. She knows how they fight, move, and what they have access to. Their strengths and weaknesses. You’re totally right, if Lexa does not intervene, the Mountain Men will gain radiation immunity and be able to leave their prison and have greater range of movement. However, she’s not going to sit idly by if they do, obviously, and even immune to radiation, once they leave the mountain they are incredibly vulnerable. Why?

I just schooled in the most polite and knowledgeable way imaginable. I am honestly thanking you. I can’t even be mad cuz that was too interesting to read. *Bows down to the new heda*

I’ve been meaning to post some follow-up thoughts on this for awhile and I’m so behind – I, too have been of the mind that Lexa’s actions were designed to shock the audience vs. being of any real use (aside from the idea of maintaining the status quo with the Mountain and just waiting them out – great analysis here from @msmayhem1515) – but I look less at the military aspect of it and how the narrative built this in to give Clarke a terrible decision to make more or less alone (thus a moment of shock) and make Lexa’s talk about weakness reach some kind of fulfillment.

I think it is still a ‘weak’ move for Lexa (not an unintelligent one, though) simply because her people would find it so: we are led to believe that she’s created a personal mandate as Commander to build a coalition with an attendant army specifically for the purpose of taking down the Mountain and freeing their people. This is literally what she is all about: we see her on more than one occasion urging her army to the fight (kom war!) – only to lead them away at the last minute.   If we followed the rules of their society, the next thing we should have heard about was how Lexa was tied to a tree and hacked to bits and a new Commander has been chosen.

But it begs another question: what WAS Lexa’s plan BEFORE the Sky people ever showed up?  She has an army, yes, but what good is it against the Mountain people who have all sorts of advantages?  What was she going to do?  It doesn’t seem to have been thought out by the writers, which is frustrating (unless there is something in the story I missed).

It got me thinking how Lexa (who is supposed to be connected to an advanced AI that is designed to help humanity make good decisions) could have used the arrival of the Sky people to a greater advantage by giving a reverse angle to the ‘deal’ she made on Mt. Weather (and keep her from looking weak).  Imagine if she’s had some foresight:

  • Lexa orders dozens of her warriors to a large tent to wait, then orders remaining soldiers to round up all of Skaikru and bring them to the tent as well, making a big show of it (in case *anyone* is watching, ahem).
  • Once all are in the tent, together, she reveals her scheme (perhaps already shared with Clarke) – the Skaikru in the tent will trade clothes with the warriors Lexa selected earlier (those without facial tattoos or braids).
  • Lexa cuts her own hair and has one of her female warriors put in her clothes and wear her warpaint, whilst Lexa dresses in Skaikru clothing.
  • The plan is, ‘Heda’ will march this group of Skaikru ‘prisoners’ to the mountain to make her own deal: she knows the Mountain want Skaikru for the blood, so she threatens to kill them all then and there if her people are not released immediately.  She knows she can’t fight from the outside – she has to get in somehow.
  • The Wallaces, not wanting to lose their one chance at freedom, agree to the terms (though there should be some in-fighting over it).  They recognise enough of the Skaikru prisoners (Clarke, et al) and agree to the deal.
  • ‘Heda’ takes the freed prisoners off the mountain and ‘Skaikru’ enter the Mountain (with hidden weapons, of course and the other Skaikru in the mountain forewarned) – aka a Trojan Horse approach.

This avoids that awkward and unnecessary ‘betrayal’ and making Lexa look ‘weak’ – but you can still wind up with a tricky situation that ends in mayhem and explosions and…who knows what.

I always thought they missed the boat with Lexa being a cyborg, with Becca’s memories and the AI’s enhancement – and how she should have been aware of Alie and perhaps concerned the Mt. Men were in collusion with her or with Ice Nation somehow (imagine a scene where Lexa steals off to a private office after the battle, and watch her use a computer as she searches for a sign of Alie’s code. With the audience not knowing what the ‘Flame’ is – this would be a shocking revelation).

With deal coming from Mt. Weather’s end (instead of Lexa taking advantage of knowledge she already had), it forces everyone up a chimney (and this show loves writing its characters up chimneys).

So, hope this isn’t a completely insensible mess.  Excellent insights, both @the-gayest-pathfinder, @msmayhem1515

Fear 309/310

lolana07:

Ahaahaha this show and randomly bringing their characters back together in impossible ways I LOVE how ridiculous this is LMFAO

I really can’t stand Nick and Madison and wherever their characters are supposed to be going. Nick hasn’t really developed, and his reunion with Ofelia highlighted that. Which says a lot, bc Ofelia has had incredibly less screen time than Nick this season, and has been largely in the background. Nick shouldn’t have killed Jer, and then he’s prancing around with Troy and now trying to talk down scared ppl, but when push comes to shove, he’s still a lost character. I’m really hard on him, but I don’t understand what is motivation is, or where his development should be going, which makes me think his whole plot is useless…If not to support Madison caring about her ‘kids’.

Madison is now a danger to those around her, she’s all over the place idk what is happening with her. She still thinks shes a great decision maker, and takes it upon herself to decide how its going to be. Legit anything bad that happens from ehre on out with her storyline is 100% entirely her fault, for not talking to Qaletaqa first about freeing strand. What if there was another way? Not really worth writing about her tbh, her whole character is off kilter. She should have killed Troy, but didn’t, and now it’s going to come back a bite her and she’s going to have to save Nick later on.

Yay Ofelia for about 7 minutes of a 2 episode premiere! Everything I never knew I wanted for that character…

Daniel..yep. Giving water to the people and still looking for Ofelia and if she would magically appear in the exact same location he is..like that would ever happen.. I can’t overlook how much I do like his scenes though, as a standalone for the character. They are gorgeous, and, without the ‘I escaped death’ plot hole, I really do like his arc… And now his plot will get messed up bc BadNewsMadison is on her way..

Alicia Alicia Alicia. This episode was awesome for her. She was on point and finally broke free from Madison and Nick’s shadow, found her voice and saw the bigger picture and got sh*t done. Yes, it was not smart to just drop the ‘we-have-no-water’ bomb that way, but dammit she did what a leader would do and trusted ALL the people, took the best option and worked as a team to fix the problem in a peaceful manner. Ahh! Yes! Our girl is growing up and I’m so proud! The writers are doing her character good! (if not so good on Madison/Nick..)

  • Lying isn’t useful mom! Walk out that gate and get out if you don’t like it! We keep trying to get her to love us but she’s broken YAASSS!
  • She’s over Madison, and it’s sad to watch. Mom’s only way to connect with her is through Alicia’s obvious Jake relationship, and when I say obvious, I mean Madison legit has no other talking point besides, Jake, Nick and status report.. the walkie talkie is a great depiction of how removed the relationship is. My only negative is that she’s still giving Nick a free pass, but dammit Nick learned from her and dear goodness I hope he continues to listen to her and follow her once Madison gets back.

How this scene just sums up this family:

‘Alicia!’

‘Hi Mo—’

‘How’s Nick? Are you taking care of him?’

‘…He’s alive.’

‘Okay great and tell me about all the other things going on besides how you are doing’

‘Its all peachy Mom, just fracking peachy. Later’

Small Thoughts

  • When did the solar panels get there? That’s high-tech for a dilapidated ranch in the middle of nowhere.
  • Calling it, Troy is going to kill Jake at some point.
  • I was so happy someone remembered crazy Gretch until she got used as a way to attack the newcomers.
  • They showed a trailer for Friend Request with the episode, which is great for Alycia.

Prediction

So they are going to do to the dam with Strand leading the way, Daniel will be there and that reunion with Ofelia will make me cry, and something crazy will happen just in time to make me think, ah yes i do want to continue watching.

@zombiechels @thedoctor-smith

Thank you for sharing this, some good thoughts. 🙂

I just read an interview with the executive producer on this and he described Madison as basically being the ‘bad guy’ even though that’s not how she starts out. I think they’re writing her in a way to suggest ‘this is how the Governor started.’  Which bothers me because…his daughter didn’t turn out so well!   So, I suppose her development makes sense then, if that’s the direction they will carry her.

I think you’re right about Nick, what motivates him?  Guilt?  Then again, who knows how to act in a situation you’ve never imagined you’d be in in your life? He’s kind of a fool and I can see him being captured (by Troy?) or getting lost in that weird ‘bazaar’ Madison and Walker went to.

The producer also mentioned how there is a Big Bad coming, someone worse than Jeremiah, but the only person I can imagine is Troy (would they introduce a completely new character so late in the season?).  I can picture Troy reconnecting with his militia eejits or coming through with a new band of nitwits to cause mayhem, maybe make him a kind of Negan-like character, hellbent on revenge against Madison (and her family).

Then again, we’re all forgetting about Luciana (who has SHE connected with – some people from the bazaar, perhaps?).  She has no reason to love the ranch or the Ottos (maybe she kills Jake or Troy or none).  There could be something big coming for that ranch.

I’m curious how things will fall apart further once Madison and Co reach the dam – since Daniel wasn’t Victor’s number one fan when they last met – might be explosive.

I think you’re right about Jake and Troy.  Or, perhaps, Jake really is sick and he dies and turns, mercy killed by Alicia?  I kind of hate that idea, though, because it’s a little Clarke/Finn-ish (speaking of, notice how Madison is a lot like Clarke and the use of ‘death is not the end? I think this show is dragging t100 a bit).

I can’t see the ranch lasting, so where do they go from there?  I can’t see the kids following Madison now, but there must a confrontation betwixt her and Troy by the end (and the murder of Jeremiah being revealed).

I do wonder if there will be another ‘big death’ by the end, or what the group configuration is going to look like.  Ofelia’s connection to Walker might help them with Daniel and the water situation (for a minute), if the ranch goes to hell, where does that leave Madison?  I can’t see how they can keep this cast together, all in the same proximity for any reason – if they keep meeting again in ridiculous coincidences, that will get old quick.  I can’t help but feel they might be writing themselves up a chimney here.

If I could imagine what might happen for the future, perhaps it goes like this:

  • At the dam, Daniel learns of Ofelia, agrees to help them get water but they are sabotaged somehow.  I think Daniel will be key in the fight at the end.
  • Alicia’s goodwill gesture holds off the hostilities, gets her and Ofelia working together again.  Doesn’t stop the militia from being eejits, though. Something is going to sabotage them.
  • I can’t see where Victor fits into any of this, unless he winds up around Troy (or Luciana) and something twisted happens as a result.  Victor manipulates others to his ends and not always successfully, so he’ll be looking for a good bet to get himself in someplace he can play Benevolent Leader.
  • I think the Clark’s have to separate by the end, but where to go?  Who would follow Madison?  Walker is with his Nation, would Ofelia stay with him, with Daniel along? If the ranch is destroyed, everyone will be looking for a new home.  I can picture Alicia going it alone (who does she have to connect to, really – she’s the only sane, moral person around who hasn’t been corrupted by what she has experienced) – but, remembering she helped save Luciana, perhaps something to do with her comes up (or she is spared because of this).  It’s hard to read.
  • I hope the Nation survives.
  • I hope we hear more from the cosmonaut, too.
  • Can Alicia just head out to NASA on her own?

Lightning Only Strikes Once: A Clexa Comic

Lexa? Lexa? Oh my god, she’s coming back! You are invited to join us on this journey with Clarke and Lexa as we bring them to life in a comic book series!

Lightning Only Strikes Once: A Clexa Comic is an adaption of the popular fanfiction written by Fiona. The story sends our heroes back to the beginning of The 100, from which it’ll change the events of the first two seasons of the show and then spin a completely original new story. Certain plot points and developments will be similar, but many will diverge from the original television program. Subjects such as xenophobia, racism, queer baiting, and many others for which the show has been criticized will be treated with the utmost care to ensure that the same mistakes are not repeated.

We started this project to bring the writing of Lightning Only Strikes Once to life and help fans see a whole new story play out, but we need your help to make this happen. We are launching a GoFundMe page to help crowdfund the production costs. Our goal is to produce a quality comic book. Additionally, we are donating a portion of each book order to the Koh Tao International Primary fundraiser promoted by Eliza. The funds would help sustain the running costs of the school and support as many children as possible so that they can receive the education they all deserve.
