Could you maybe do a fic where neither Clarke or Lexa falls into freezing water and the other goes “well now I’ll have to get naked to keep you from dying”
The trees creaked and cracked against the bitter cold that froze everything it touched. The entire forest seemed to moan with complaint against the frigid state of the world as the only two brave enough to venture out of the warmth of homes and buildings as the blizzard began to descend upon them.
Hooves trudged through the accumulation that obscured the familiar path, blurring out all directions in a multitude of white and grey. But still, they horses pressed on through the glacial midmorning with the foolhardy notion of beating the worst of it.
There are currently 74 wildfires burning in the western United States, many of them are approaching heavily populated cities such as Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. The La Tuna fire is now officially the brush fire in LA history. Air quality warnings are being issued across the entirety of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. I’m in Portland, about 40 miles out from the nearest wildfire, and it’s raining ash and difficult to breathe due to the haze.
If you live anywhere near these fires, you’ve probably heard this by now, but please be safe. Stay indoors if at all possible and keep windows closed. Keep pets indoors as well. Hopefully some of our trademark Portland rain will come soon to help minimize the damage.
I really don’t understand the kudo system so I don’t pay attention to it. Feedback is more practical as it tells me what might be good or not so – many of the messages I’ve received have been confused about the story’s plot or things I thought were obvious. There’s a disconnect. Without that feedback, I wouldn’t know this and could take no real steps toward improving.
2 we’re really angry about the lack of containment b/c it is SO close to major residential areas now that would be a nightmare to evacuate. It’s over 10,000 acres right now and there’s no containment. The heat and winds haven’t helped but its so suspciious how the news doesn’t really report on what the fire crews are supposedly doing other than saving buildings that don’t need to be saved. the fire needs to be stopped and thats not happening.
I’ve seen some of the images and this sounds so horrifying. I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I know nothing about fighting fires so I don’t know about the response, perhaps they are doing what they can do, this fire seems enormous. I hope there is relief soon. Be safe.
I’m honored to share the news that Uncanny Magazine has reprinted my short story “Ghost Town” in their latest issue, available now online alongside stories by N. K. Jemisin, Catherynne M. Valente, and Delia Sherman. You can buy the complete issue from Uncanny Magazine, and you can read “Ghost Town” right now for free.
“Ghost Town” is set in a fictional Colorado town on Halloween night, and it takes place backwards. The main character is a snarky queer teen girl who has the chance the spend the night ghost-hunting with a cute girl. Things don’t go quite as planned.
This story was originally published in the Defy the Dark anthology in 2013. When I reread it recently to prepare for the Uncanny reprinting, I was surprised to see that “Ghost Town” was apparently an early prototype for the voice in A Line in the Dark. And a character that is mentioned in “Ghost Town” has now been fleshed out in Line. It’s so interesting when these things happen. Characters and voices apparently lurk in my imagination for years in advance.
If you haven’t read “Ghost Town” before, now’s your chance! Hope you enjoy it.
