Pop Quiz: It’s just you and the love of your life lost in the desert with no way of knowing if you’ll be rescued. You have one bottle of water left. If you share it, together, you’ll only last one more day. If you let them have it, they might last another four or five days, though you will likely perish (and vice versa). Do you survive one more day together or do you give up your share so they have a better chance to live?

There are too many variables that need to be answered: how did we get there? Do we know what desert we are in? Do we have any other supplies, shelter, food?  Are we injured?  I think I read somewhere that a person on their own is less likely to survive vs. having a partner to share the emotional, physical and psychological load.   How many litres is this bottle?  I’m sure we could break it down to sips and keep going a few days, get a plan together and find our way back to civilisation, or be rescued. I’d rather not leave the love of my life alone – the only way I would is if I were so badly injured I would be a burden to her finding a way out and finding help.  

Hi DoctorSmith i loved that video on John Williams i’m a music junkie film music espesh, and you talk about music sometimes. are you a musician? what’s your favorite film score? who is your favorite film composer?

That was a good video. I appreciate that there are so many that help breakdown orchestrations for students and for general interest.  I started piano when I was four, so that’s my instrument (I’ve tried others, but I’m not very proficient).  I have loads of favourites, too many to list here, but I’ll recommend you a few and see if you like.  

  • George Fenton’s score for Shadowlands – I didn’t like the film much (the original teleplay was better). It’s one of the few scores you could listen to without the film. Feels complete and pastoral, a bit RVW, relaxing and lovely, some very nice choral pieces (you can find some of it on YT).
  • Nino Rota’s score for the 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet – really evocative of the Elizabethan era, full of nuance and longing and while it might be considered a little trite now thanks to so many ‘modernised’ versions of the main theme, it holds up.  
  • Philip Glass’ The Hours – you’d have to appreciate his minimalist style, but here it perfectly underlines the thoughtful cadences of this film. Glass’ music is the perfect background for the inner workings of troubled minds and repressed emotions.  
  • Ennio Morricone – The Mission.  Look up his live performances of this score on YT, it’s worth it. He’s written some of the greatest themes and I think Gabriel’s Oboe is his finest.  
  • John Barry – Out of Africa.  The score just sings, beautifully over this gorgeous-looking film (which is about all I can say for it).  
  • I’m bothered that the last two films I’ve selected have troubling colonialist/white hero themes.  My enjoyment of the music in no way marks a preference for the films themselves.  
  • Rachel Portman, Chocolat – evokes the dark, fairytale quality of this story, being swept along by a strange wind.  Portman deserves more work and better recognition.  
  • Terence Blanchard – Malcolm X – Blanchard is a jazz musician and his score is filled with references of the time periods that cover Malcolm’s life, but it builds on its own to something almost ethereal and funereal – this doesn’t get much mention anywhere, so I hope you look it up.

As for favourite composers – I just can’t go there.  I love all sorts of music and it would take me too long to list as I need to organise them appropriately.

Hi I just read your story and wonder if you could answer my questions? 1) did ALIE perish in the fire? 2) will we see Costia or is she dead (I really want this to be Clexa endgame) 3) is Titus Becca’s husband in this? I hope we get an update this week really want to know what is going to happen! Thank you

I’m only going to answer two of these to avoid anything spoilery: Titus is not Becca’s husband, he ran her household and took care of Lexa after the Weather Men attacked.  Costia is dead (we may have some flashbacks to her time), Clexa is always endgame.  

No update this week, I’m going to stick to a monthly update, so end of the month or first part of May.  Thank you for reading and taking the time to write.

Orphan Black is a dark comedy.  While there has been mayhem and angst aplenty, ending the show with any of the sestras dead would be a gloomy step too far.  They’ve all been through so much to just end up dead.  I’m counting on some goofy triumphs with an underlying dread that nothing is ever really over. 

I get that we’re not trusting anymore, and when you’ve been messed with so much, it’s a natural response.  I do worry a bit that if the show does take that negative of a downturn – what will the response be?  I can’t picture another round of fan fury ala Lexa’s death, but it would certainly mean some very negative notices and commentary.  

I’ve a feeling these folks would rather go out on a high.
