Pop Quiz: You’ve got a twelve hour drive ahead of you there are no radio stations and you are only allowed one mix CD. What songs will you include?

Do people still make mix CDs? You can have what, 20 tunes or so?  I’d need sounds to keep my mind moving (and not care this will be on repeat 20 times) so maybe these (chosen from a near-random sampling from my iPod):

  • Sugar Sugar – The Archies
  • Oblivious – Aztec Camera
  • I only want to be with you – Bay City Rollers
  • Wouldn’t it be nice – The Beach Boys
  • Army of Me – Bjork
  • Take Five – Dave Brubeck Quartet
  • A little respect – Erasure
  • Stupid Girl – Garbage
  • The Love you Save – Jackson 5
  • Tell Me Something Good – Rufus w/Chaka Khan
  • Somewhere Only We Know – Keane
  • The Boatman – The Levellers
  • Valerie – Amy Winehouse/Mark Ronson
  • Your Precious Love – Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell
  • The Youth – MGMT
  • My Baby Just Cares for Me – Nina Simone
  • Sunrise – Norah Jones
  • Happy – Pharrell Williams
  • Bus Stop – The Hollies
  • Hayfever – Trashcan Sinatras
  • Wonderland – XTC

I’d need a separate CD, but Glenn Gould’s 1982 recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations would be nice, along with various Renaissance/Medieval music (Tallis, Dowland, Gibbons, de Machaut, etc).

Hi! I saw your post on the new Wonder Woman theme vs that other song by Simon Collins and I get where your coming from so many similarities. Maybe someone needs to tell Colins and talk about it when the movie opens?

With all the hype around the film, if there is something to complain about with the theme (and I’m not convinced there is, in spite of similarities), Collins will know soon enough (if he doesn’t already).  So much music is incredibly derivative anyhow.  John Williams probably owes everyone from Mozart to Holst a few pennies for knicking their ideas.

Classical Pieces You’ve Probably Heard but Might Not Remember the Name

Add others if you want! Have fun!

I’m sure there are more but these were some of the first that came to mind as missing!

I think this one’s missing, one of my favourites:

Danse Macabre – Camille Saint-Saëns

This is one of the best classical music master-posts I’ve ever seen. I’m so proud of yall

This is wonderful.  🙂

Since there are a few pieces that fall out of the ‘classical’ era, can we expand a little further?  Most of these pieces people have likely heard in film or elsewhere.
