stop scrolling!

for all of those reading this who are not Americans/Canadians, here is what you can do!

signal boost and read below!

now, while net neutrality would only have an effect on Americans whose ISPs decide to no longer abide by net neutrality laws, it will impact people of other countries.

the ending of net neutrality would mean that ISPs can charge more for access to websites, like Tumblr. ISPs can also filter what can and cannot be seen. essentially, the web would no longer be open. this would not happen all at once, but slowly. you would, in some situations, have limited communication with American mutuals. the fandoms, communities, and so on that have developed on social media with American users would be stunted. Help protect your friends and their internet! Signal boost! Spread the word to everyone to encourage American friends to take action!

but here’s the thing, Americans.

we only need one more vote! the congressional review act (CRA) would allow congress to reverse the FCC’s decision to repeal net neutrality. it only requires 83% support to reverse this decision, and we lack one vote. get off your asses, folks. if your senators have not yet pledged, call them! google scripts!

we are the generation we have been waiting for. take a stand. the vote is on April 23rd. fight like we are running out of time, because we are.

Signal boost. Everywhere.

Tim Berners-Lee: we must regulate tech firms to prevent ‘weaponised’ web

“I’m still an optimist, but an optimist standing at the top of the hill with a nasty storm blowing in my face, hanging on to a fence,” he told the Guardian in November. “We have to grit our teeth and hang on to the fence and not take it for granted that the web will lead us to wonderful things.”

Tim Berners-Lee: we must regulate tech firms to prevent ‘weaponised’ web

Reminder: Americans lose access to a free and open internet next month. Do not be surprised if some voices on here disappear.  Do not be surprised if other countries begin to follow suit.

Or you could try to do something about it, like calling your representatives or taking to the streets if all else fails.

Democrats are just one vote shy of restoring net neutrality

thoughtremixer:

I haven’t done an update on Net Neutrality in a while as I was trying to find a reasonable “next step”, especially since it’s been out of the “news cycle” for a bit. Well, I have some good news.

According to the senator (minority leader Chuck Schumer) from New York, they now have a total of 50 votes for a Senate resolution of disapproval that would restore the Open Internet Order of 2015 and deliver a stiff rebuke to Ajit Pai and other Republican members of the FCC. It would also prevent the agency from passing a similar measure in the future, all but guaranteeing Net Neutrality is permanently preserved

What’s stopping them now? They need just ONE more Republican and they have less than 30 days to do it.

So goes the next actionable step. You have to contact your senators and get them to suppose the Congressional Review of “the Open Internet Order of 2015″.

There are two ways to go about it.

1) Via 5calls.org using this script – https://5calls.org/issue/fcc-net-neutrality-cra

2) Via https://resist.bot/ – you can write to Congress using this site or  Text RESIST to Resistbot on Telegram, Messenger, or to 50409 on SMS. By providing basic information, you can write your Senator to move forward.

Now, if you got a Democratic Senator, push them on to find that one Republican Senator. If you got a Republican Senator, encourage them to reconsider their stance on Net Neutrality.

We just need ONE Republican Senator and we have less than 30 days to do so.

Democrats are just one vote shy of restoring net neutrality

Bell, Cineplex, Rogers and Shaw are trying to censor the internet and force the end of net neutrality in Canada.

allthecanadianpolitics:

It’s scary – Bell, Cineplex, Shaw, and Rogers are trying to censor the internet and force the end of net neutrality in Canada. And worse, they’re trying to do it behind closed doors.

These 4 companies, led by Bell, are pushing to create an internet “blacklist” of certain websites that all internet service providers in Canada would legally have to block. They know this outrageous proposal would never pass, so first, they tried to sneak it into NAFTA negotiations – and now Bell is expected to introduce its proposal to Canada’s telecom regulator TOMORROW.

Critics are calling this move “unprecedented” and dangerous. If these companies get their way, this internet blacklist would have absolutely zero oversight in the courts. We need to stop this urgently.

CALM DOWN ABOUT NET NEUTRALITY.

Don’t worry. They still have to go to court.

But guess what? There’s something you didn’t know about the vote.

Get this: the vote was basically illegal.

You heard me right. Eric Schneiderman, American lawyer, said in Twitter: “I will sue to stop the FCC’s illegal rollback of #netneutrality. New Yorkers and all Americans deserve a free and open internet.”

Not only do we have another ally, but now we know that the vote wasn’t supposed to happen.

We’ve got this. Now the REAL FIGHT starts now.

In case you are wondering what was illegal! There was evidence of THOUSANDS of fake messages from the public, and the FCC was asked to delay their vote and aid in the investigation. Despite this, they still went forward.

CALL AND EMAIL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES! FIGHT FOR A FREE INTERNET!

Gotta disagree with op-don’t calm down…be ANGRY! Be LOUD! Be DOWNRIGHT OBNOXIOUS! Come on! We can fix this!

Losing is not an option here.  If America fails on this, it will spread everywhere else.

By the by, has there been any legality to anything Dump has initiated since taking office?

becauseweknowthem:

Honestly?

The FCC is going to vote to overturn Net Neutrality.

Keep calling. Keep trying.

But be braced for that to fail.

Ajit Pai doesn’t care what the people have to say about this.

But.

Congress is going to be the group that pays for this when it happens.

We’ll all know Ajit Pai’s name, and we’ll curse him when we hear it, but it’s Congress that holds all our hopes right now.

They’re the ones that will be voted out of office for not voting for a bill to restore net neutrality. They’re the ones that will have to answer to constituents. They’re the ones that both have the ability and the possibility of doing something to counteract the vote by the FCC.

So.

Call the FCC, leave comments, attend protests – all of that is good.

But call your Congressional reps. Call your senators. Call your governors. Let them know that you’re watching, and that you expect them to step up if the FCC decides to do this.

And on December 14th, after the FCC votes, call them all again, and ask what they’re going to do now.

I’m still curious how all of this began.

I know why it’s happening, of course, we all should: it’s to silence people and limit their ability to participate in democracy.  But they couldn’t sell it that way, could they?

So what was their excuse? Did they even bother with one? Did they even try to drum up some report, some statistics that repealing Net Neutrality was ‘good’ for everyone?  Did they hold ‘town halls?’  Did they let the public comment on it? What information have they given to your representatives?  Where is the documentation?  Why were one million IDs stolen to support it?

They’re not even bothering to hide what they’re doing.  It’s a power grab plain and simple.  Put pressure on your reps.  After the Alabama election, they can see there is power out there they should be fearful of.  Remind them of it.  Every day if necessary.

Remind ISPs if they even think about acting on the repeal, they’ll pay for it, not you.

Patreon got its arse handed to it and backed down. Own your voice, be as powerful as you are and stand up.  It’s only freedom, right?
