The comic industry has come together, with over 300 artists and writers contributing to Love is Love, an anthology to honour the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando.

Containing moving and heartfelt material from some of the greatest talent in comics, the book mourns the victims, supports the survivors, celebrates the LGBTQ community, and examines love in today’s world. It includes over 100 graphic stories including appearances from Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Archie, and Harry Potter.

All material was donated, and proceeds from the book go Equality Florida to support the victims of the shooting and their families. You can buy a copy here.

18 years ago a man walked into a school in Dunblane, Scotland with four handguns and killed 16 students all under 6 years old, a teacher and then himself.

This led to a debate on gun control and in 1997 2 firearms amendment acts were passed making it illegal to own a handgun for personal use in the United Kingdom.  We have had no shooting on a similar scale to this since.

6 weeks later in Australia was the massacre in Port Arthur when 35 people were killed and 23 wounded, which led to the imposing strict gun control. There have been no shootings on a similar scale to this since, either.

If I hear one more person tell me that there’s nothing that can be done in the US when there are massacres after massacre I will scream because it is so clear and people are pretending to be blind.

Dunblane is still a leaking wound.  Never forget.

I wonder if the Orlando/Pulse shooting is going to be taught in high school history classes or if it’s just going to be reduced a paragraphs mention and maybe one APUSH test question like Stonewall did. I wish our history and the traumatic things that happen to our community mattered to anyone besides us.

How we learn is changing.  Schools may not add this into textbooks, but the Internet remembers.

It’s both a comfort and an uncomfortable truth.

Yet there was a time when you could walk around London or New York and see these gaunt faces, marked with sarcomas, and everyone you hung out with was dying. The official culture was in denial. Sometimes it was easier to be. I remember seeing Derek Jarman at a play. At that point he was blind. I didn’t want to see him like that. And then my friend was queer-bashed on the way home. Freddie Mercury died. Keith Haring died. Eazy- E from NWA died. Denholm Elliott died. Rock Hudson died. Fela Kuti died. And my uncle who wasn’t famous or even my actual uncle died. One of my friends lost seven people who were all under 30.”

I’ve such harrowing memories of this time. At 17 I lost a cousin and several friends (only in their 20s) – in one year.  So many good, talented people gone before they had a chance to live.  The lack of compassion or concern from the wider world was probably the hardest part to grasp.  How can people be so cruel and unkind, even to their own children?

And how much of that hateful ignorance remains?  We don’t talk about it much, anymore but it’s always there.  Never forget.
