Gillian is so fake for speaking with a posh British accent lol she was raised a few blocks from where my relatives lives and that accent is no joke. A true worker’s accent. Her accent is like she’s raised in the royal palace. I give sir Ian McKellen the same side eye for not using his northern accent. It’s so silly.

Yes, Gillian is pretty much the worst. Awful woman.

What’s pretty silly is that so many people in this country still judge your accent because it is attached to your social class. I’m lucky, I have a foreign accent (well, it’s not lucky really) but to be refused a job because your accent is too working class or too Welsh or too posh is not a problem of what accent you choose, it’s about British society who cannot let go of this idiotic and frankly archaic prejudice.

Yep, this is a ridiculous statement. I have lived in London all my life and there are so many variations of the ‘London accent.’ You can’t simply state that G shouldn’t speak the way she does because of the area in LDN where she grew up. I had many different friends growing up, all with slightly different accents due to a variety of factors including the accents of our parents and which school we attended. We all lived a stones throw away from each other but didn’t speak exactly the same. This is true everywhere, not just London.

And I agree @mulderswaterbed, the obsession with accents in Britain can be very prejudice. I was at a party on Saturday night and was asked why I speak like a ‘posh person’ from Westminster when I actually am from a different part of town. It was said with such disdain and I actually ended up walking away when he began interrogating me about which school I attended etc. I have very little patience when it comes to things like that.

As an outsider who did her BA in English and had two f%^$cking years of phonetic course and is trained to speak RP I can testify that the whole thing about the British accent expands beyond Britain.

At my uni  if you  speak with a British accent you’ve been trained in,  you speak like a queen and nobody speaks like that, you try to speak not too posh, you’re not doing good enough job  and “who taught you phonetics? Where’s your kit vowel?”

Seriously. It’s not my native language as long as I am understood by the native speakers of English and by other people who speak English my accent is enough to be a  professional teacher or translator of English. I am not from England and I won’t pretend that I am.

But my professors let  themselves be brainwashed by this British accent prejudice-propaganda  and pass that prejudice over to their students and then they  go to England and everybody laughs at them and tell them that they’re are fake and nobody speaks like that so stop it.

Let it go, England. Let it go.

PS: ‘British accent’ does not equal ‘English accent’ only.
