Sometimes we all need a little moment of joy.

Vivian Darkbloom was the name of a Xena fan fiction writer back in the day and she was probably one of the more brilliant, original writers out there (her Mel and Janice stories are some of the best and earliest examples of epic AU writing, and her ‘trailer trash’ series is still hilarious).  Here’s a Whoosh article on her contribution to what was then called ‘uber’ fiction in Xena.

Her Xenafiction.net page is still available with links to her stories, all of which I can recommend (even if you’re not familiar with Xena, you’re probably familiar with the tropes associated with her and you’ll certainly find something to connect with).

I’m very pleased that she’s still around, still writing and has even posted one of her classic Xena stories, Infamiaon AO3.  I do hope she chooses to upload more of her Xena fiction so it can be easily found by a new audience, whom I know will love it all.

Do give her a follow, support and read.

Gay Tumblr: we didn’t get our way, this is homophobic!

Kiddos, if hearing that your ship of choice isn’t going to be canon is homophobia, then you live in privilege. If that’s the worst thing you can experience, then you’re doing pretty well.

Calm the fuck down. Queerbaiting involves actively seeking out a queer audience and trying to covet them by promising queer relationships.

This is literally the opposite of that. They’re telling you upfront what to expect.

This isn’t what the outrage was about.

This didn’t start over fans being whingey over their ship not being canon – it was an actor making fun of them for thinking their ship was anything but ‘friendship’ in the first place.  It was the mocking sing-along he led with the cast (save McGrath who looked embarrassed and later tried to turn it around) that made them look homophobic and mean. They were rightly called out for it. Not for queerbaiting – for being rude and mean-spirited toward a fandom that hardly ever sees representation (even if it was a spontaneous act – the joke was at other people’s expense).  Imagine being a 12 year old Supercorp fan seeing your heroes making fun of you for thinking Kara and Lena could ever be together.  No one needs that.  And Jordan only made it worse when he issued an ‘apology’ that made himself out to be a victim.

This was about the attitude and manners of so-called allies – it was hurtful.

If there were people asking for SC to be canon – whinging about it, even – they didn’t deserve to be publicly humiliated over it.  We get around 1% of the representation out there – and we’re made fun of in the bargain?  They could have used the moment as an opportunity to discuss representation and what it means (as McGrath tried to do) – I guess it was easier to just make fun of it.

Supergirl

99percentyou:

Calling all those strongly opposed to Karamel as a couple, Mon-El as a character, and the deplorable writing of the Supergirl staff and the toxic messages they’re sending: racism, sexism, misogyny.

We have the power to incite change. We have the power to turn the tables. Write them. Write media outlets. I’ve read some of your arguments, and they are great. Send them. Flood their inboxes. Give them all the negative press we can. Target the sponsors of the show.

If you are sick and tired of seeing them neglect Alex/Maggie in favor of Kara/Mon-El who spend 99% of the time arguing, tell them. If you are disgusted by the way The CW canned the interracial coupling of Kara/James as soon as they switched networks in favor of a white male, express yourself! If you are baffled by the message they are spreading by insinuating that we as women are supposed to forgive the man in the span of a few hours no matter how deeply betrayed or hurt we feel, let it be heard! If you are pissed because they sent M’gann to her home planet therefore alienating (pun intended) yet another black man to allow for more Mon-El screen time, shout it out! Whatever has struck a nerve with how terribly this season has gone all because of a privileged frat boy from Daxam crash landing on earth, let them know.

Don’t think it won’t matter. It will. Ratings matter. The show may be renewed for season 3, but we have the power to dictate how that season will play out. Storylines are NOT set in stone. We have to be proactive! Raise hell. Stand up for Kara Zor-El because clearly we cannot trust anyone else to do it for her. Let’s take our show back.

If anyone remembers the shit storm with The 100 and the whole Lincoln/Lexa thing, then you already know what a fandom can do when they write sponsors and fight for their voices to be heard.

whuts all the poll stuff? you dont poll

The ‘poll stuff’ is media companies, looking for clickbait, create popularity polls that pit popular ‘ships’ against one another and create unreal levels of cattiness amongst fandoms.  Considering how many of these ships are canon or ‘fanon’ f/f or m/m relationships, it’s arguable they are queerbait as well.  There is no real prize, nothing but the satisfaction of making (young) people quibble and quarrel over trivia while they rake in the cash.

This time around, three f/f fandoms decided to support one another when it looked like there might be cheating.  I support them working together, but wish they’d ignore these ‘polls’ and do something that actually pushes the industry to make changes in its discriminatory practices in minority writing/representation.

Better together

Since three f/f fandoms have now suddenly got together to decry possible bot cheating in a (Zimbio) poll, it would be super if they stuck together to trend and make a difference over better representation for minority characters (especially since two of those fandoms are for ‘fanon’ ships).
