THE CW’S OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON ALL THE FUCKING CRITICISM MON-EL AND HIS UGLY ASS STORYLINE HAS RECEIVED IS THAT “CHRIS WOOD AND MELISSA BENOIST GET ALONG GREAT AND IT’S THE RIGHT WAY TO TELL A STORY”

I’m sure Benoist and Woods’ personal relationship off-screen has nothing to do with it.

It’s just dictating the entire story – instead of the show being ‘Supergirl’ it’s the Melch Super Hour.

Unprofessional? Standard issue Hollywood, really. More a microcosm about the privilege of being straight and white:

The story is always about you.

THE CW IS LITERALLY OUT THERE PUTTING THEIR FOOT IN THEIR MOUTH N THEN SHOOTHING THEMSELVES IN THE LEG FOR GOOD MEASURE

Yikes! What a mess

Mark Pedowitz is the same man who supported Jason Rothenberg after he queerbait the Clexa fandom for ratings – is it such a surprise that he supports this?

They have no interest in their audiences or the effect they have on them.  He can be haughty about it because he knows the kids will still watch.

Does The CW really deserve your time?

whoops

Is there a direct correlation between tired and homophobic?  No.

Is there a direct correlation between tired and not straight?  Yes.

For my anons on this – read the above, please.

They might be tired from one day of it – but we have to deal with it our entire lives.

It’s exhausting to have one point – calling out the celeb who did the mocking – turn into the ‘shippers’ (wow) being the problem for calling it out in the first place. It starts with their bad manners – to being about ‘our’ bad manners (or, you know, the problem shippers).  I want to say ‘not all queers!’ but you know how that goes.  We all get tarred and feathered with the same brush.  Sound familiar?

It always circles back to us and how our feelings, issues, opinions – us – become invalid in the public eye.  We have to be the bigger people – not them.

They’re exhausted?  Welcome aboard.

It’s their table and we’re always reminded that we’re not really welcome – unless, you know, we behave how they like.  And not too many of us at one time.  Send the Designated Queer.

Anyone up for it?

lenarise:

a comprehensive list of how the CW’s supergirl dedicated their weekend to getting their PR team to beg for mercy

  • SDCC had an easy start until it was clear that mon-el (the most hated character) was at the forefront of many conversations and chris wood continued to speak over other cast members and draw attention back to himself
  • melissa answered a question about her character where she completely ignored the existence of a season long relationship with a beloved black character, james olsen, in favor of saying that her white love interest, mon-el, was kara’s first boyfriend
  • then the supergirl cast sang a song recapping season 2 and jeremy jordan damn near derailed it as he started screaming that kara and lena are friends, they’re oNLY FRIENDS, THEYRE NOT GONNA GET TOGETHER, THEYRE ONLY FRIENDS!! melissa joined in the screaming as well while most of the cast laughed, mehcad brooks deadass started to dance on the spot
  • then melissa and jeremy patted themselves on the back for “debunking” that ship, saying it was “very brave” to do so
  • for no reason whatsoever, chris wood stated that sexuality is at its core, about how other people perceive you and not how you identify
  • then the cw dropped a trailer for a show called The Ray, in which the nazis won world war II and the jewish characters of kara zor-el and barry allen are, hey why not, they’re nazis
  • at the end of the first day, jeremy jordan wrote an apology for his actions so offensive that he had to follow up an hour later with an apology for his apology
  • this weekend it was also confirmed that the character of maggie sawyer is only signed for a handful of episodes before writing her off completely, eliminating the only gay relationship the show has (and apparently, the only one they intend to have)
  • when contacted regarding the homophobic incident at comic con, melissa benoist’s publicist claimed that her client couldn’t be homophobic (she was on glee) and then threatened to sue a black, non-straight fan for implying that she could be

sidenote – katie, odette, david: you’re angels you deserve none of this

I’ve heard all except about the nazi one and about suing a fan.

This really went off the rails.

I looked up the link about the fan who allegedly emailed MB’s publicist, but it seems a bit dodgy to me.  Most of it is typed up and the response is illegible, no visible signature – well. And the emailed ‘response’ seems rather inflammatory and condescending to me – and quick.  Would a publicist really engage like this?

Looked up The Ray – io9 describes this show as a cartoon featuring the The CW’s first openly LGBTQ lead character (um, did they forget about Clarke Griffin on T100?).

But its not just Nazis, unfortunately. Germany has its group of people with superpowers, the Reichsmen… and it turns out they’re evil, Hitler-loving versions of the CW’s Flash, Green Arrow, and Supergirl, and are even voiced by their actors from their respective TV shows. (Because turning beloved heroes into fascists is the hot trend of 2017.)

Is this something the world really needs right now?  Isn’t HBO in hot water for making something similar?  Zoinks.  What a weekend.

Katie McGrath answers on what she thinks makes fans like Supercorp so much.

this isn’t just a burn, she freaking obliterated them

It’s worth noting that in the video with the song, Katie tries to explain that people are allowed to see what they want in art and Chris interrupts her to say something stupid about how sexuality is about others perceptions of you, to which Jeremy says something along the lines of i know about perceptions as a theater kid (implying haha i can’t be homophobic bc people think i’m gay because theater’s so gay guys). This line about fuck perception, you are who you are feels like it’s a direct jab at that previous interview…. and thank you Katie for doing it.

Gay Tumblr: we didn’t get our way, this is homophobic!

Kiddos, if hearing that your ship of choice isn’t going to be canon is homophobia, then you live in privilege. If that’s the worst thing you can experience, then you’re doing pretty well.

Calm the fuck down. Queerbaiting involves actively seeking out a queer audience and trying to covet them by promising queer relationships.

This is literally the opposite of that. They’re telling you upfront what to expect.

This isn’t what the outrage was about.

This didn’t start over fans being whingey over their ship not being canon – it was an actor making fun of them for thinking their ship was anything but ‘friendship’ in the first place.  It was the mocking sing-along he led with the cast (save McGrath who looked embarrassed and later tried to turn it around) that made them look homophobic and mean. They were rightly called out for it. Not for queerbaiting – for being rude and mean-spirited toward a fandom that hardly ever sees representation (even if it was a spontaneous act – the joke was at other people’s expense).  Imagine being a 12 year old Supercorp fan seeing your heroes making fun of you for thinking Kara and Lena could ever be together.  No one needs that.  And Jordan only made it worse when he issued an ‘apology’ that made himself out to be a victim.

This was about the attitude and manners of so-called allies – it was hurtful.

If there were people asking for SC to be canon – whinging about it, even – they didn’t deserve to be publicly humiliated over it.  We get around 1% of the representation out there – and we’re made fun of in the bargain?  They could have used the moment as an opportunity to discuss representation and what it means (as McGrath tried to do) – I guess it was easier to just make fun of it.
