This is on my dash quite a bit: a lack of support of shows like Black Lightning because networks like the CW are racist/homophobic (past behaviour/people in charge) and have hurt audiences (without consequences).
There are people who will use this as an excuse for their own racism, that’s just a fact. Is it what it all boils down to? No. But racism is a huge factor in not supporting this. I get the tug of war some have. There’s more to it, yes. As part of the queer audience, I get where the resentment comes from (and I know how angry some people are toward this network). But we’ve asked others to get over theirs to support us. We have to do better. We have to keep challenging our privilege. We’re not going to win anything if we don’t support one another and support representation. We’ve got to bring the margins to the fore. Isn’t this part of how we do it?
There’s so much we despise about this system/that network and it does need to be addressed, but where are we on that? We’re still watching telly. Let’s make it count for something.
Adding here TV Grim Reaper’s ratings post. I don’t think international viewers affect this, and I don’t think this includes streaming views, either.

i think it’s weird that ppl can boycott stuff like the 100 for killing lexa but then continue to watch four episodes of supergirl where the nazis won
But…but…the two queer ladies slept together so that makes it okay…and then they posted bts pictures that Clexa fans thought they were going to get…and…and…then…the world went silent
I feel for everyone on this. I know you want it. I’d watch if it happened, but it won’t and here’s why:
This boils down to business relationships. Netflix already has a business relationship with The CW. So does CBS (co-owner). If Netflix thought for a hot second that a Grounder’s spinoff was doable, it would go through the hierarchy at WB/CW, first. If JR has legal rights (as their creator), he gets a say and he will get credit. There’s no avoiding it. If they did a spinoff, it would be entirely under their terms (their money). They’d deny even having seen the fan trailer. They’d keep far away from any fan ideas to avoid any legal concerns of credit.
Keep in mind, too, back in 2016, JR talked about writing an origin story (book) for the Grounders. This would be a complete conflict with a fan-centred project. He has the business relationship with the networks. His ideas would be the ones the spinoff is based upon (whether this book ever happens, who knows – his career is likely to see a slump after t100 is cancelled).
As far as ADC is concerned, this would be a backward move for her. The CW is unlikely to do any sort of spinoff (least of all something to please a fandom that thoroughly humiliated them), and the 100′s ratings suggest it faces cancellation, soon. ‘Lexa’ is a big taboo for that network now. The only way I can see ADC returning, albeit briefly, is if she is invited back for some flashback material or something in the finale, if warranted (like Clarke obtaining the flame). I’m sure lots of little boxes would need to be ticked off before she’d agree to it. Is this likely? No idea.
What might be likely is, a few years from now, if someone decides on a reboot. Someone with some vision who recognises what failed before and where it could be improved and decides to make ‘Clexa’ a proper part of the show. That could even be one of you. Even so, JR could still get some sort of credit.
I love this fandom, how rich and creative it can be, and I wish everyone on this project well and hope they find their way to applying their gifts to even greater things and, one day, taking over the industry.
Very best to you all.
THE CW IS LITERALLY OUT THERE PUTTING THEIR FOOT IN THEIR MOUTH N THEN SHOOTHING THEMSELVES IN THE LEG FOR GOOD MEASURE
Yikes! What a mess
Mark Pedowitz is the same man who supported Jason Rothenberg after he queerbait the Clexa fandom for ratings – is it such a surprise that he supports this?
They have no interest in their audiences or the effect they have on them. He can be haughty about it because he knows the kids will still watch.
Does The CW really deserve your time?

Keep making noise Clexakru (⊙‿⊙✿) #LexaSpinoff RT this TWEET
I hope you all know this isn’t Netflix, but a fan account. This company manages fandom entertainments – it is not affiliated with Netflix.
Since The Grounders/Lexa are owned by The CW/J. Rothenberg, they aren’t likely to create a spinoff that they aren’t 100% a part of, nor create anything to suit a fandom that thoroughly humiliated them last year (over an issue they’ve never discussed or apologised for).
I wish everyone on this endeavour well – but so many people were hurt, are still hurting, mistrustful – if a spinoff happened it would, at The CW’s discretion – more likely be about the Grounder’s origins, not Lexa. It would be a benefit to those who hurt us. I hate seeing people led on and hurt even further.
Very good luck.
a comprehensive list of how the CW’s supergirl dedicated their weekend to getting their PR team to beg for mercy
- SDCC had an easy start until it was clear that mon-el (the most hated character) was at the forefront of many conversations and chris wood continued to speak over other cast members and draw attention back to himself
- melissa answered a question about her character where she completely ignored the existence of a season long relationship with a beloved black character, james olsen, in favor of saying that her white love interest, mon-el, was kara’s first boyfriend
- then the supergirl cast sang a song recapping season 2 and jeremy jordan damn near derailed it as he started screaming that kara and lena are friends, they’re oNLY FRIENDS, THEYRE NOT GONNA GET TOGETHER, THEYRE ONLY FRIENDS!! melissa joined in the screaming as well while most of the cast laughed, mehcad brooks deadass started to dance on the spot
- then melissa and jeremy patted themselves on the back for “debunking” that ship, saying it was “very brave” to do so
- for no reason whatsoever, chris wood stated that sexuality is at its core, about how other people perceive you and not how you identify
- then the cw dropped a trailer for a show called The Ray, in which the nazis won world war II and the jewish characters of kara zor-el and barry allen are, hey why not, they’re nazis
- at the end of the first day, jeremy jordan wrote an apology for his actions so offensive that he had to follow up an hour later with an apology for his apology
- this weekend it was also confirmed that the character of maggie sawyer is only signed for a handful of episodes before writing her off completely, eliminating the only gay relationship the show has (and apparently, the only one they intend to have)
- when contacted regarding the homophobic incident at comic con, melissa benoist’s publicist claimed that her client couldn’t be homophobic (she was on glee) and then threatened to sue a black, non-straight fan for implying that she could be
sidenote – katie, odette, david: you’re angels you deserve none of this
I’ve heard all except about the nazi one and about suing a fan.
This really went off the rails.
I looked up the link about the fan who allegedly emailed MB’s publicist, but it seems a bit dodgy to me. Most of it is typed up and the response is illegible, no visible signature – well. And the emailed ‘response’ seems rather inflammatory and condescending to me – and quick. Would a publicist really engage like this?
Looked up The Ray – io9 describes this show as a cartoon featuring the The CW’s first openly LGBTQ lead character (um, did they forget about Clarke Griffin on T100?).
But its not just Nazis, unfortunately. Germany has its group of people with superpowers, the Reichsmen… and it turns out they’re evil, Hitler-loving versions of the CW’s Flash, Green Arrow, and Supergirl, and are even voiced by their actors from their respective TV shows. (Because turning beloved heroes into fascists is the hot trend of 2017.)
Is this something the world really needs right now? Isn’t HBO in hot water for making something similar? Zoinks. What a weekend.
The CW now has a tradition of hiring entitled straight white males who don’t think they owe the people they hurt a real apology.
It’s all our fault for taking it the wrong way.

Y’all I’m pissed
Is there proof or confirmation she has been “pushed off”? Or is this just over reacting and fan speculation?
ali adler is missing from the credits in the cw’s official synopsis for season 3 of supergirl. seeing that she co-created the show and has been an executive producer for the first 2 seasons and now she’s suddenly not an executive producer or any sort of producer on the show it seems, yeah. it’s legit. she hasn’t made a statement about it on twitter from what i’ve seen, but if this was a mistake, the cw would have fixed it by now since the synopsis has been out a few days now.
So, a couple things to add, because I have been tracking this since March for my S2 writer/director/producer diversity report card (S1 can be found here), and I have been wondering for a while why Ali stopped doing anything to do with Supergirl since 2×09.
Real quick: There are 3 basic levels to pay attention to in this conversation: co-creator, executive producer, co-executive producer.
- The three people with co-creator designation are Ali, Greg and Andrew. You’ll note on imdb, they’re the names listed as “developed” for the writing credits.
- Since Greg has so many shows, though, he also brought on Sarah Schecter to be a fourth executive producer. These are your defacto showrunners. While Greg oversees the overall Arrowverse stuff, the three of them were taking care of SG specific big picture stuff. However Sarah left after 2×06 to act as showrunner for Riverdale, and Robert Rovner took over as executive producer. So please note, it went from 2:2 in S1 to 3:1 in S2 for male vs female exec producers.
- Co-executive producers help run the day to day stories and manage the nuts and bolts. As far as creative decisions, they usually get more say than staff writers but not as much as the showrunners. For S1, you had Yahlin Chang (19 eps) and Larry Teng (7eps) co-exec producing. For S2, you had Larry Teng (6) and Jessica Queller (13 eps).

So when you look at the media, your talking heads should be the showrunners. That’s why Sarah Schecter went to Comic Con. That wasn’t a red flag for Ali not to be there, because Andrew wasn’t there either, but it was kinda curious that a lot of the written media and interviews was with Andrew and ONLY Andrew. However, Ali was the talking head for all the Supergirl Inside videos (eps 1-9), so you can see the division of labor there, and it didn’t grab my attention yet.
1) The first really big red flag, however, was Paleyfest’s announcement on February 8. Melissa was the only one listed for Supergirl. The other shows also took some time listing the actors, but for the producing side, virtually every other DCTV showrunner was present. Wendy Mercile, Mark Guggenheim for Arrow, Klemmer for Legends, Helbing brothers and Kreisberg for Flash. Where was Ali? Flag #1.
2) So then I started paying attention to the Supergirl Inside videos. Ali did every single Supergirl bts video for S1, all the promotional media for CBS, and all the S2 Inside interviews for S2 1-9. But 2×10 and 2×11 (Jan 30 and Feb 6, respectively), it’s Jessica and Robert. And, particularly as I was growing frustrated with the romantic focus and Mon-El issue and Alex’s lack of a real storyline in Feb and March, I noticed it kept being Jessica and Robert talking in these videos.
By the way, they’ve done all the Supergirl Inside videos for the rest of the season, except for one Inside video where it’s Melissa and David gushing about Kevin Smith at Paleyfest. Ali, actual co-creator and showrunner, wasn’t anywhere on the BTS stuff, so her disappearance was definitely troubling.
3) The Valentine’s Day ep was a hot mess, and so I went to check out her Instagram and Twitter to see what she had to say about it- and you’ll notice, she goes from Supergirl related pics all over on her Instagram, virtually every other one and promoting the show on her Twitter to…her kids and politics. There’s a drop off in the trend, and since then she’s only ever posted about Supergirl when it’s Chyler/Alex/Floriana/Maggie/Sanvers getting nominated for GLADD or LGBTQ stuff.
Add on the fact that now she’s not listed as the exec producer for S3 in the write up?
Yeah, it’s totally legit, and someone needs to tell us what the hell happened, because if you line up when Ali disappeared and where S2 started to really go off the rails with respect to Alex’s storyline and the show no longer being centered on Kara, it’s a perfect match.
It’s bad enough we went from 1:1 ratio to 3:1 with Sarah gone. If Ali was forced out of her own show, then you basically have all men running Supergirl at the executive producer level, which…actually explains a lot about the back half of S2.
Disturbing.
Not surprising coming from The CW – but, still, disturbing.
Have you read this, @yesbothways?
Calling all those strongly opposed to Karamel as a couple, Mon-El as a character, and the deplorable writing of the Supergirl staff and the toxic messages they’re sending: racism, sexism, misogyny.
We have the power to incite change. We have the power to turn the tables. Write them. Write media outlets. I’ve read some of your arguments, and they are great. Send them. Flood their inboxes. Give them all the negative press we can. Target the sponsors of the show.
If you are sick and tired of seeing them neglect Alex/Maggie in favor of Kara/Mon-El who spend 99% of the time arguing, tell them. If you are disgusted by the way The CW canned the interracial coupling of Kara/James as soon as they switched networks in favor of a white male, express yourself! If you are baffled by the message they are spreading by insinuating that we as women are supposed to forgive the man in the span of a few hours no matter how deeply betrayed or hurt we feel, let it be heard! If you are pissed because they sent M’gann to her home planet therefore alienating (pun intended) yet another black man to allow for more Mon-El screen time, shout it out! Whatever has struck a nerve with how terribly this season has gone all because of a privileged frat boy from Daxam crash landing on earth, let them know.
Don’t think it won’t matter. It will. Ratings matter. The show may be renewed for season 3, but we have the power to dictate how that season will play out. Storylines are NOT set in stone. We have to be proactive! Raise hell. Stand up for Kara Zor-El because clearly we cannot trust anyone else to do it for her. Let’s take our show back.
If anyone remembers the shit storm with The 100 and the whole Lincoln/Lexa thing, then you already know what a fandom can do when they write sponsors and fight for their voices to be heard.
