Heyo Doc you had a total Last Jedi breakdown and its gone can you pass that by me again??

I was informed I might have hit too close to home and didn’t want to spoil anyone.  But I’ll post my thoughts under the cut:

Rey is the daughter Han and Leia thought was dead, perhaps left behind by Luke on Jakku for her own safety from her brother, Kylo.  It’s possible Rey is not her real name (what it was Padme or such?).  Luke was terrified of what Kylo is capable of and will be even more terrified of what Rey can do and is reluctant to teach her for that purpose (he will, anyway, he’s the film’s Obi Wan).

Rey will learn her real parent’s identity, knowing she met her father, but he was killed by Kylo in front of her (and it looks like he’ll kill Leia, too), knowing she was so close to a reunion, will set her a possible path to the Dark Side, wanting revenge, and the third film will close with Kylo’s death (after he’s achieved some kind of ill-gained redemption that only white male characters can achieve) and Rey gets to pass on her Jedi training to a new generation or something similar.

Hi doc! theres money on this so, if EVERYONE gets nightblood who will be the next commander?

Are you betting money on my response? Hope you haven’t put much money on it.

As much as I like logical progressions in stories, this show writes itself into so many corners, that if you offer a suggestion, it will almost always be wrong.

So – a new Commander? Who? Why? Gaia will likely turn up again, so will Indra. Who is connected to them? Octavia.  Those Aragorn jokes seem a little less funny?  Octavia has been in the process of becoming something for a while. Does it seem a likely fit?  Perhaps, in the future, at the end of the series.  She fits the mould of mythic heroes:

  • A secret birth, a child that had to be kept secret (Arthur, Aragorn, Luke/Leia)
  • Apprenticeship with an older, noble character (Arthur, Luke)
  • A threat to the old order (on the Ark and on the ground) (Arthur, Aragorn, Luke/Leia)
  • Survives a terrible wound/fall (Aragorn, Luke)
  • The claiming of a weapon of power (Excalibur, Anakin’s lightsabre, Isildur’s sword) – in Octavia’s case, this could mean The Flame, or maybe she’s given Lexa’s sword?  This is where I lose the thread because Octavia hated Lexa (she might have developed a little respect after death) and having her succeed Lexa would just be another loss of whatever legacy Lexa has lying around.  Octavia is not her heir.  She’s a warrior, a murderer as well, which taints her a bit – but if there are growth spurts for her character, who knows?

Now, Lexa was seen as somewhat Arthurian (in series 3, at least), but Octavia rings certain bells.  If they will have another commander, it makes sense to me that this character would not emerge until the end, a new commander for a new day (if, you know, they all survive) and being a character who has an understanding of both Grounders and Skaikru, Octavia might emerge as that leader.  But who knows?

It is possible that, if given night blood, Clarke could take the Flame again but for no use other than to have it, not to be Commander.   Sadly, it seems Clarke’s agency, fierceness and leadership have been undermined and overwritten and she’s basically a shell of the character she was.  Niylah telling Clarke that ‘Lexa lives through her’ might be hinting at something, but – not enough to suggest anything (except a Clexa endgame scenario that isn’t terribly likely).  Clarke could wind up a brood mare like all the other women who could survive Apocalypse part deux, just settle down and repopulate the world, or she could save her thankless people one last time and wave goodbye.

This last bit, of Clarke being killed off (which some seem to want to see) is a problem to me because the makers of this show got scorched over killing off one queer character already (as we all know, eh) – are they likely to risk pissing off everyone again by killing another?  Clarke could very well live and I’d love to see her as the Commander proper.

Now, having said that, it isn’t at all likely to happen.

Like I said: hope you didn’t put too much money in this!

Discussing virtual realities / simulated environments today and been wondering if t1oo will follow the pattern of legendary SF stories like Simulacron-3 and The Matrix and involve the protagonists learning they have always existed within a simulation.  The ‘City of Light’ simulation being just an interior level of the greater simulation.

It would also be an easy way out for them – everyone who has ‘died’ in the simulation is either transferred to ‘the real world’ or another simulacrum.

Addressing quantum universes as endless simulacrums?

Bah.

Is Delphine still with us?

I believe it is highly likely.  Here’s why:

– Krystal found Delphine and got her help.  Whatever happened between the two of them, galvanised Krystal to find out what is ‘going on.’

– If Krystal found Delphine, a logical place to help her hide is in her own home.  Everyone thinks Krystal is an idiot, so no one is looking at her, and she is even ignored when she ‘investigates’ Brightborn.  It’s possible Delphine has ‘fed’ Krystal some information, perhaps to find out what is going on in Brightborn, but that’s unclear.  Krystal could be acting entirely on her own (but how did she do her ‘research’ that led her to Brightborn?).

– If Delphine is dead, ‘telling us’ she is dead is weak – it also doesn’t hold with Krystal’s ‘tease’ about knowing all about Delphine.  There’s more to the story.

– On the pro-death side, Krystal doesn’t refer to Delphine in any particularly familiar sort of way.  ‘This French doctor,’ isn’t how you refer to someone you know.  However, she was defensive about Donnie knowing who Delphine was (and she assumed Donnie worked for Brighborn) and we know she saw her get shot (why was Krystal in the Dyad parking garage?).

– Delphine would not be with the Neos, she’s not with Susan Duncan – unless there is a twist where we learn Evie Cho hid Delphine and we find her hooked up to a machine at Brightborn (but why?).

The teasing/jocular nature of this season’s narrative (starting with that ‘in memoriam’ video) regarding Delphine highly suggests the character is alive, but, perhaps, not in the best shape.  It also suggests we won’t see much of her.  If, however, the producers are simply that callous about her, that wouldn’t surprise me, either.

It gets to be exhausting being gay and being ‘teased’ by programmes about the fate of gay characters.  It’s so childish.
