Hi Doc i’m commiserating over the no Xena reboot too it’s such a shame and I hate it so much because this time right now is like the BEST time to do it. If they wait like another five years it won’t be the same. We’ll be burned out with Wonder Woman or whatever they give us. This is IT and they’ve thrwn it away. So I wanna ask like they want to KNOW, so how would YOU do it? If you had the job how would it get done?

This isn’t at ALL an alarming ask, so I’ve had to have a think.

There’s a need for resolve from the original ending, to please everyone and to reaffirm the importance of Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship. It’s the heart of the show, so start there. I would have liked to see a six-episode mini-series: set 15 years after Xena’s death, we see how Gabrielle fared, what her life is like, etc.  I like the idea of her returning to the Amazons to rebuild the nation. Nero is the evil emperor this time around.  SOMETHING HAPPENS and Xena returns and the first two of the six episodes are about this reunion, with a happy conclusion.  Lucy and Renee returning, of course.

The following four episodes would reiterate the soulmate theme as we move through the centuries, basically creating ‘uber’ stories (like the Xena Scrolls episode).  Visit them in the 19th century.  The 1920s, maybe.  Visit Janice and Mel again, in the 50s, this time.  Each of these episodes though, has to have a tie-in theme that will set us up for the new series.  The easiest thing I can think of is the chakram, how it disappears, reappears, etc.  Lucy and Renee play all these versions as well.

The final episode is set in a post-apocalyptic future, roughly two hundred years before the start of the new series, but in the same timeline.  This episode jump starts us into the new series, to take place in a society that isn’t the usual dystopian P-A, but a world that is rebuilding – so we have a ‘new’ Amazon nation, a ‘new’ Rome, etc – and a new Xena and Gabrielle.  The ‘look’ doesn’t have to be some wildly sci-fi business, but a mix of what we have seen before.

So, there is it, my take.  I’d like to read what others would have done.

Where’s Xena?

I wonder if the ‘Amazons’ series that was set for The CW (and now scrapped) was part of any consideration about holding back on a new Xena series. Certainly, Wonder Woman and whether it would be a success or not must have been part of the conversation, but I hope that it now shows women-led productions are capable of making money and there is a strong interest in such programming.

I hope someone is looking at giving it another go.

Though, in the name of all that is good in this world (ahem), please don’t give it to the CW.

I need some hope doc, do you think we’ll ever get a new Xena?

While it makes me sad and a little angry that they missed opportunity after opportunity and waited so long, I do think we will have one, eventually.  It might not be for a while, though, as Wonder Woman is around the corner and Xena is just too closely associated.

I do hope that whoever gets to ring that bell, they start by giving closure to the original story/fandom by having Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor return – if just for a one-shot – before giving us a different version, a reincarnated Xena and Gabrielle in some other time period.  For one, it would mean the original stays with LL and for another, it gives a new actor a chance for a new take that won’t interfere with or compete with what happened before.

I just wouldn’t count on anything anytime soon.  The 25 anniversary?  I can see that.

I am SO OVER anti-rebooters giving me shit on facebook

i just want more xena.

You cool, don’t let em keep you down

I want Xena to be like Superman: a franchise so embedded in the dna of pop culture that everyone knows the basics of “former warlord seeking redemption traveling with her plucky bard lover,” with endless reimaginings, I want it to live beyond just being one cult show from the 90s, I want it to be like, Sherlock Holmes persistent, with new versions for every new generation of young lady gays, ugh, I want it baaaad.

Preach it

All the above.

I think we all want to see LL/ROC back, it would be beautiful, hope it happens – but I think we also want this to become a new franchise that will last a long time. Call it a reboot or whatever, but there will have to be a new Xena/Gabrielle.

Sadly, I wish NBC showed more enthusiasm for this. Just not seeing it.  With Tapert and Co working on AvED, will they veer off to return to Xena?

I do think the potential Wonder Woman franchise has probably thrown this project off.  If they were serious on this, I think they would be moving with nostalgia marketing (license some damn Funkos), a blu ray box set, and getting some hype together to build critical mass toward a new series.  Because this hasn’t happened, a new series (even a mini-film) seems a long ways off.

Kind of an aside, but I think a bluray is unlikely no matter what, because it’s a matter of technology. I think Xena falls into the window of time when they weren’t shooting on digital yet but they were editing and adding special effects on NTSC resolution footage rather than on the shooting resolution…To do a bluray release that looked any better than the dvds, they’d have to find the original film of the show and then REDO the cutting and the special effects and the coloring and all that in order to do blurays, I think. I read a big long explanation about it in regards to Star Trek DS9 here earlier this month: http://www.treknews.net/2017/02/02/why-ds9-voyager-not-on-blu-ray-hd/

Not Great News :/

Is there such a thing as a ‘good news day’ anymore?

If no blu rays, there’s so many other options for nostalgia marketing – even if they never go ahead with a new series.  It’s easy money.

If everyone with the reboot was all for making Xena canon, open queer – makes me wonder if that had an impact on the reboot going ahead.  I hope not.

Your Xena anon is back! I saw that rb of Javi’s post about Xena updates. Seemed a little salty to me. Do you think we’re getting Xena back?

Oh that.  I think JGM is very careful in what he says, how he words things and his wording was very specific about Tapert, wasn’t it?  I don’t know if it was salt or humour or both, but I’ve a feeling JGM’s version isn’t happening – or at least not anytime soon.

Could be wrong – would be happy to be wrong.  I still think WW is making it difficult for them to get a schedule (and, who knows, maybe the campaign for a renewal vs. reboot is having an impact?).

Xena nonny here hi again how are you doing? I’m starting to think they won’t bring her back & people are starting to give up. This makes me so sad. We need Xena!

NBC has shown no interest in this property:  we’ve seen no new licensing for collectibles, though she’s a prime property for nostalgia investors. There’s been zero media interest (Wonder Woman/Supergirl is all the chatter) and no announcements since JGM spoke about leaving t1oo to work on his own show (implied to be Xena) last summer.

It’s always a possibility, and WW could be damming up the works, pushing a reboot further and further out. Maybe write to Rob Tapert or JGM and see if you get a response.  Sorry it makes you sad – have you read the recent Xena comics? The quality of the art varies, but the story was quite good. I suggest having a look.  Take care.

Hi! Xena nonny here again i’m tooting mad about no Xena FUNKO dolls too can’t believe we don’t have em and can’t believe no news no talk nothing about the reboot. Have you seen anything? it’s like tumbleweeds out here.

No, I’ve not seen any updates on the reboot, if it’s even still happening. No news, though, sometimes, can be good news. Keep in mind with all the hype around the new Wonder Woman film, it’s possible NBC doesn’t want to muddle a potential new Xena franchise. They could very well be waiting to see how WW takes off then go ahead with a new Xena. But who knows? It might be in production hell for all we know.
