why does wynonna earp make you nervous??

I said last year that the WE team must have written a bible based on the Clexa debacle about How To Keep Your Queer Audience, because they seem to tick off little boxes:

  • Clexa fans wanted ET/ADC to have a photoshoot, do interviews together, be seen together more.
  • WE: Check. Wayhaught not only do photo shoots together, they tweet one another in character almost and appear at events like Clexacon and ComicCon together.

There’s some studied dedication to ensuring their queer fans are watching and happy.   I suppose this should make me want to watch, but it doesn’t somehow. There’s something offputting about a straight showrunner catering content for us. I’d like to know if there are any queer writers/producers on the show.  Is the WE team doing more to help elevate actual queer voices and talent – or is it just for themselves?

Not that this is a necessary thing, but if you’re putting yourself out there as this Big Ally, it must be for more than just promoting your programme or yourself, right?  I admit my thoughts on this might be muddy and I might not have the full picture.

I do appreciate the fan interaction though and maybe I’m just missing out or too old.

I’d really love to have Xena back, though.

hey doc u on the Wynonna Earp train yet? U like Xena u luv this. this is the show for us right now hope you watch!

I don’t watch much television, really and it’s hard for me to get into a programme if I’m not already predisposed in some fashion. I do see a lot of WE on my dash, lots of praise for the cast, the Wayhaught ship, etc., but it kind of makes me nervous.

Since you brought it up, does remind me we really should have a return of Xena by now.  *sigh*

Watch from 1:27 mins in. This isn’t what I was looking for but it will do just fine in showcasing just how accepting and encouraging the entire cast and crew were in showing a romantic relationship between the two lead characters. Lucy and Renee, initially surprised and shocked, seemed to go with it straight away. For the fans. For the people who felt like they needed that representation to be who they are unashamedly. To feel like it wasn’t wrong or inappropriate. This show gave them that and that’s why I’ll always defend it.

They went in. Completely. Lucy went to lesbian bars to watch the show with the patrons. Renée and Lucy went to the Australian Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney 1999.

So not only did the cast and crew accept and respect that part of the show’s fandom. They went out of their way to be supportive.

The Xena fandom was a wonderful thing to be a part of – still is, actually.

Why you hate Wonder WomaN?

Never said that I did.

I didn’t relate to the film due to being old, unfortunate heteronormative circumstances in the narrative, and the fact that I was spoiled by years of Xena: Warrior Princess on telly.

Mostly, I was really bothered by Diana seemingly not having one friend on that island who wanted to go with her – basically leaving her to go off with a strange bloke and never be seen by her people again.  These were Amazons. Trained for war and to defeat Ares. Save Diana, not one of them wanted to go and do what they were supposed to do. It’s one thing for the over-protective queen mum to sit back and fret, it’s another when her entire tribe falls in line with it.

That entire island should have followed Diana.  Making them anything less just so Steve Trevor can be her heroic BFF and love interest – heteronormative nonsense I sincerely hope the sequel doesn’t indulge in.

And yes, I realise the film is ‘Wonder Woman’ not ‘Wonder Women’ – but really, in 2017 – it should be.

That scene where she smiles in the battle is great, where did that come from?

I did that. I remember after we did that take, Zack came to me and he said, “Did you just have a smirk?” I said “Yeah.” And he asked, “Why? I think I like it, but why?” “Well if he’s gonna mess with her, then she’s gonna mess with him. And she knows she’s gonna win.” At the end of the day Wonder Woman is a peace seeker. But when fight arrives, she can fight. She’s a warrior and she enjoys the adrenaline of the fight. – Gal Gadot (x)

Psst: know who else smirked a lot and enjoyed a good fight?
