What the hell, fandom?

hellalez:

I don’t know what’s happening right now with OITNB fandom accusing Clexa fandom of not making a big deal about Poussey’s death on OITNB. My Twitter is *full* of Clexa fans who are incensed about Poussey and def making a big deal out of it. I think basically one person here on Tumblr who has a bunch of followers/defenders has made the Clexa fandom look terrible. That blogger definitely does not represent the Clexa fandom that I’ve experienced.

I strongly suggest unfollowing people who try to make the case that Poussey isn’t BYG and/or those who would downplay the fact that she’s also a WOC.

This has been a devastating season for LGBTQ+ and for POCs, fictional and in real life.  No one should be undermining the importance of what is going on.

Characters like Poussey and Lexa – alive and making a difference – is a far more powerful, subversive, progressive lesson than all the bullshit ‘edgy realism’ their shows could ever offer.

We need our role models alive and well and setting the example, not dead, non-existent, invisible.

the only political statement lgbt people need from fiction right now is that lgbt people are valuable and important and deserve to be happy but like by all means keep murdering our fictional role models while we’re grieving

THIS.

okay here’s what i think about root’s death (please bear in mind i’m on s4 and not caught up, but i have been reading spoilers for the new season):

  1. im not pissed. this is the one time that i will willingly let a show out of this because ‘anyone can die’, because they can. poi is the kind of show where you see main characters get shot at on a weekly basis to the point where it becomes kind of routine. sometimes they die (sorry carter) but mostly they live. that’s how it goes when you’re fighting a killer AI.
  2. root’s characterisation and arc over the last three seasons has been amazing- one of the best stories i’ve seen in terms of development. she was never intended to be the token lesbian to appeal to us, it just happened. she was intended to be a killer hitman with abilities to rival or even beat harold’s.
  3. from what i’ve heard she died in a very ‘root’ way. she fought against the enemy just like she has been for seasons now when she has walked through corridors filled with bullets and hitmen. this isn’t like lexa where she was taken out by a stray bullet even though she’s a mighty warrior. this death was justice to her character and her situation.

i started watching poi for root and i am really sad to see her go. she’s the first character that i’ve felt is truly like me and i am sad that i won’t get to see her anymore. but that doesn’t mean we should boycott the show or send hate mail to the writers. cool, include her in your statistics, send them your thoughts, but don’t make it flop. please don’t throw away a show that has spent seasons highlighting so many issues and features a queer WOC character that has a mental disorder.

i will keep watching poi and i’m grateful that a character like root ever existed at all. sorry for the long post, but with all the negativity it had to be said.

they can write literally any story they want & its carter, a woc, & root, a lesbian, who die,,,,,,

and i completely understand that. carter’s death was unnecessary in my mind, there was so much left to be done with her character and it was random in my opinion. but don’t pin root’s death down to it just being about that and class it in the same category as the 1OO when it really isn’t. it is nowhere near as bad.

yes but it can never ever ever be good

So, if the bakery didn’t poison you – just those other people – we shouldn’t close the bakery?

This is about a poisoned community demanding better, longing for the kind of representation straight male characters get thousands of times over.  It’s not about the death of any one character.  It’s a much bigger issue than that.

Dear Entitled Straight Show Runners

Your fantasies about us are not our fantasies about us.  Our reality is not reflected in yours.  You get to see fantasies about yourselves everywhere you go.  We don’t trust your take on us, we usually don’t even like your take on us.  Stop using us if you’re not going to give us the same respect and representation you give yourselves.

And no, just because you sometimes kill yourselves off and make yourselves the villains doesn’t equal anything.

Your fantasies are not the same as ours.

2016: the year the lesbians said goodbye, boarded the mother ship and flew back to Lesbiana.  So long and thanks for all the fish bait.
