Pre-Nazi ruled Germany was the most liberal country in the world. Sexologists were advocating for the acceptance of gay and lesbian people and of inverts (an earlier form of what today we would call transgender). While anti-Semitism was still strong, there was a thriving Jewish culture in Germany, including a very active theater and music scene, some of the first anti-fascists were Jewish artists lampooning Hitler on stage. Black people from the U.S. who could moved to Germany because of the opportunities it afforded them. The social sciences and the hard sciences, especially technology flourished too.

This isn’t to say that Germany itself was a “good” country, it had brutally ruled colonies after all. But then again the U.S. also has colonies we just don’t call them that these days and instead of slavery and racial rule we have smiley faced neo-liberalism and puppet states.

This is just a warning that something can happen here like what happened in Germany. We’re not such a wonderfully progressive country with such great laws that fascism can’t sweep in and roll back all the civil rights that have been won over the decades since the Second World War.

Hitler himself said the only thing that could have stopped him was if the people smashed all the nuclueses of his movement when it began.

So let us smash all the developing organs of the modern fascist movement today so we don’t have to suffer under them tomorrow.

And let us not forget that we must go further than our anti-fascist forbears and destroy the systems that breathe life and pump blood into reactionaries: capitalism, the state, white supremacy, hierarchy, patriarchy, etc.

Prediction: Dump scales back some of his rhetoric, thinking if he lays low enough for a wee while, people will become complacent again.   If he tries to ‘force’ things, it will backfire.

Media – you need to grow a vag.  All the kowtowing and normalising going on will not help you survive in the near future.  You are taking your last bows.

Theater 101: On civility, Risk, and the Demonization of Dissent

Our correspondent, Alison Kinney, responds to Saturday’s interaction between the cast of Hamilton and Mike Pence, and the way Donald Trump is “weaponizing the discourse of civility and respectability against the people who stand to lose the most in the next four years.”

Just another reason to aggressively avoid their trolls – let them say what they want, don’t take the bait.  Let them spin what they want – don’t take the bait.  How we handle them is so very important.  We can’t be twisted up in their ‘rhetoric.’

GO 👏 THE 👏 FUCK 👏 OFF. Also, the American educational system is trash. I applaud this child’s parents for giving her a voice and standing up against bias authority.

(Can someone caption this?)

Classroom full of mostly black and brown students:

Black student: [unintelligible—and then]  …and then throwing everything away beneath it because it doesn’t pertain to you. I’m sorry —

White teacher: —you know what, I’m sorry -I’m sorry…

Black student: —No, no, no…I let you talk -I let you talk, you’re gonna let me talk.

[Other students gasps]

White student: Go ahead. Finish.

Black student: I’m sorry that this is the way that it is. You’re right, it is fucked up. But white people control everything…and that’s not fair. And when anybody, any other minority tries to say anything about it or change it, we’re complaining or we’re ungrateful or all this other stuff because we still have this or that. But then you say something about ‘Oh, I don’t want—there’s too many Latinos and there’s too many—’

White teacher: I didn’t say that—

[Various students disagree]

White teacher: I said I want to control the border!

Black student: You said you don’t want this to turn into a Latin country because there’ll be too many

White teacher: I did not say that.

[Various students disagree]

Student 2: You said you want to preserve the American culture.

Black student: There is no American culture. American culture is EVERYTHING.

[Various students agree]

Random: Mayonnaise!

[Students laugh]

Black student: And because you are white and so closed-minded, you refuse to accept that, you refuse to accept—

White teacher: Don’t tell me I’m closed-minded—

Black student: Everything you’ve said to me is closed-minded.

White teacher: Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean I’m closed-minded.

Black student: You don’t need to agree—I -I’ve had conversations with people that don’t agree with me, but if they at least listen and try to accept—you’re not accepting the truth.

White teacher: Why do I have to accept what you think is right?

Black student: You need to accept the truth! Not what I think is right, what is actually happening right—

White teacher: Well, let me tell you what I think. You said white people have been in control of everything….who is the president of the United States right now?!

Students: A black man!

*Various sounds of incredulity*

Black student: WITH A WHITE CONGRESS! WITH A WHITE SENATE! WITH WHITE EVERYTHING ELSE! HE DOESN’T HAVE THE CONTROL OF EVERYTHING!

Random: GO OFF

Other Random: GO OFF–

*The class is in an uproar*

Random student: YOU ARE SO PRIVILEGED THAT YOU JUST DON’T SEE IT!

White teacher: Do we have to yell?!

Black student: Yes, because I’m mad.

Go off everywhere.

Also, while talking about the situation with Pence and Hamilton right now, please keep in mind that it was a recipe for disaster from the start…..and that was more than likely intentional.

The danger of Trump’s camp from the start has lain in people equating ‘over the top’ with ‘stupid’. They are anything but stupid. Every move they’ve made has been calculated, and I don’t doubt this was any different. There is no way, in the face of all the protests and sentiments expressed towards Trump and Pence since the election, that it didn’t occur to anyone that Pence going and seeing Hamilton of all things, would likely cause an uproar.

And what else happened yesterday of significance? Trump settled the lawsuit for fraud against Trump University….for over double what it was expected to settle for. Our president elect essentially admitted to defrauding people via Trump U, and paid $25 million dollars to settle it. This is utterly unprecedented. Also of note in the last couple of days was that the Trump hotel in DC held an event for foreign diplomats, in which it was made plain to them what benefits might come from diplomats making use of the Trump hotel when visiting DC. After all, what better way to ingratiate yourself with the US President you’re here to see, than to be able to say ‘oh I stayed at your lovely hotel?’ And what worse way to get off on the wrong foot than by admitting you stayed at one of his competitors? This is but one more of the MANY conflicts of interest at work with Trump’s presidency.

But Pence goes to see Hamilton, and predictably enough, he gets heckled and booed and that’s the story of the day, and Trump’s tweeting about it, and everyone’s focused on Trump tweeting about it and Pence getting booed…..and suddenly nobody’s talking about the MASSIVE story that is a president elect settling a fraud lawsuit for 25 million dollars and enticing foreign diplomats to use his hotel to get in his good graces.

See how that works?

Focus on the real story – lose that focus, this is all for nothing.

Anyone who thinks for a moment that speaking out/acting out against Dump and his hate train is being ‘radical,’ anyone who says these are ‘radical’ actions – ask yourself why you’re not questioning the rise of a fledgling Hitler and racist goons.

We deal with this in the UK, post (and pre)-Brexit.  We have Scots calling for a 2nd indyref over this. We don’t want this to be our lives. We know we can be better than that.  We have to stand up for what is right and protect what we know is good, the value of human lives must not be diminished by fascism.

Ask yourself what you’re going  to do.  I promise you, it won’t be radical.
