One woman delivered the perfect response to Donald Trump’s Twitter meltdown about SNL. A little louder for the people in the back, please.
Brilliant.
We need a few million more people like her doing this.

This election wasn’t normal.
Questioning if Jews are people isn’t normal.
Spraying peaceful protesters with freezing water in freezing temps is not normal.
Alt-right isn’t a thing. It’s called White Supremacy. It isn’t normal.
Fascism in the White House isn’t normal.
President-elects picking fights with FUCKING Broadway casts isn’t normal.
Teachers calling students “niggers,” or telling Muslim and Mexican students they will be deported isn’t normal.
Trump isn’t normal.
Do not normalize this. It will get innocent people brutalized and killed. Speak up. Get up.
WAKE. UP.
Complacency will end us.
If you wonder what you can do: keep calling/writing news media, local representatives, urging them to resist neutrality and complacency on this new, fascist paradigm. Don’t allow them to get away with supportive or positive headlines/stories about Dump and Co. Share the facts, demand an election audit/recount, report/condemn the neo-nazi trolls and be as loud as you can.
Democracy depends on a free and
independent press, which is why all tyrants try to squelch it. They use seven techniques
that, worryingly, President-elect Donald Trump already employs.1. Berate the media. Last week, Trump summoned two-dozen TV news anchors and executives to
the twenty-fifth floor of Trump Tower to berate them for their reporting about
him during the election. For twenty minutes he railed at what he called their “outrageous” and “dishonest” coverage. According
to an attendee, “Trump kept saying, ‘we’re in a
room of liars, the deceitful dishonest media who got it all wrong,’” and he called
CNN a “network of liars.” He accused NBC of using unflattering pictures of him,
demanding to know why they didn’t use “nicer” pictures.Another person who attended the
meeting said Trump “truly doesn’t seem to understand the First Amendment. He
thinks we are supposed to say what he says and that’s it.”2. Blacklist critical media. During the campaign, Trump blacklisted news outlets whose coverage
he didn’t approve of. In June he pulled The Washington Post’s credentials. “Based
on the incredibly inaccurate coverage and reporting of the record setting Trump
campaign, we are hereby revoking the press credentials of the phony and
dishonest Washington Post,” read a post on Trump’s Facebook page. After the election Trump agreed to meet with the New York Times and then suddenly
cancelled the meeting when he didn’t like the terms, tweeting “Perhaps a new meeting will be set up with the @nytimes. In the
meantime they continue to cover me inaccurately and with a nasty tone!” (He then reversed
himself again and met with the Times.)3. Turn the public against the media. Trump refers to journalists as “lying,” “dishonest,”
“disgusting” and “scum.” Referring to the journalists at his rallies, Trump
said, “I hate some of these people,” adding (presumably in
response to allegations of Vladimir Putin’s treatment of dissident journalists)
“but I’d never kill ‘em.“He questions the press’s motives,
claiming, for example, that The Washington
Post wrote negative things about him because its publisher, Jeffrey Bezos, a
founder of Amazon, “thinks I would go after him for antitrust.” When the New York Times
wrote that his transition team was in disarray, Trump tweeted that the
newspaper was "just upset that they
looked like fools in their coverage of me” during the presidential
campaign.4. Condemn satirical or critical comments. Trump continues to condemn the coverage he’s received from NBC’s
“Saturday Night Live.” In response to Alex Baldwin’s recent portrayal of him as
overwhelmed by the prospect of being president, Trump tweeted that it was a
“totally one-sided, biased show – nothing funny at all. Equal time for
us?”
When Brandon Victor Dixon, the actor who plays
Aaron Burr in the Broadway musical “Hamilton,” read from the stage a
message to Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who was in the audience –
expressing fears about the pending Trump administration for the “diverse group
of men and women of different colors, creeds and orientations” on the cast –
Trump responded angrily. He tweeted that Pence had been “harassed,” and insisted that the cast and
producers of the show, “which I hear is highly overrated,” apologize.5. Threaten the media directly. Trump
said he plans to change libel laws in the United States so that he can have an
easier time suing news organizations. “One of the things I’m going to do if I win
… I’m going to open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and
horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money.”During the campaign, Trump
specifically threatened to sue the Times for libel in response to an
article that featured two women accusing him of touching them inappropriately
years ago. Trump claimed the allegations were false, and his lawyer demanded
that the newspaper retract the story and issue an apology. Trump also threatened
legal action after the Times
published and wrote about part of his 1995 tax return.6. Limit media access. Trump
hasn’t had a news conference since July. He has blocked the media from
traveling with him, or even knowing whom he’s meeting with. His phone call with
Vladimir Putin, which occurred shortly after the election, was first reported
by the Kremlin. This is highly unusual. In 2000, President-elect
George W. Bush called a press conference three days after the Supreme Court
determined the outcome of the election. In 2008, President-elect Obama also meet with the press three days after being elected.7. Bypass the media and communicate with the public directly. The American public learns what Trump thinks through
his tweets. Shortly after the election, Trump released a video message outlining some of the executive actions he plans to
take on his first day in office.Aids say Trump has also expressed interest in continuing to hold the
large rallies that became a staple of his candidacy. They say he likes the
instant gratification and adulation that the cheering crowds provide. The word “media” comes from
“intermediate” between newsmakers and the public. Responsible media hold the
powerful accountable by asking them hard questions and reporting on what they
do. Apparently Trump wants to eliminate such intermediaries.Historically, these seven
techniques have been used by demagogues to erode the freedom and independence of the press. Even
before he’s sworn in, Trump seems intent on doing exactly this.
Media have been rolling over for people like him for decades. Media is owned by people like him. Dump’s actions are pure intimidation of anyone who would question him. If they act separately, challenging him a little at a time, they’ll be crushed.
If they work together, staying on message, on point and not wavering, he’ll have a heavy brick wall to bang his head against. Rebellion is absolutely imperative. No neutrality. Not this time.
The important thing to realize about neo-nazis and modern nazi sympathizers, because it’s the one thing they can’t deny, is that they’ve learned to use their own absurdity as a defense mechanism, to a degree not even Sartre predicted. Having a cartoon frog as their symbol is a strength for them, because it means whenever the media reports on them, they get to turn the narrative into “haha, the mainstream media is talking about a cartoon frog! We got ‘em good!”.
This is part of a wider asset of modern neo-nazism. Truth means nothing to them, primarily with regard to their own members. “Trump’s Phantasmagoria” is an excellent article about this- it explains how trump’s complete disregard for facts actually helped him, because it let people who disagreed with some of the awful things he’s said say “oh, he didn’t really mean that.” And this attitude is everywhere on the right. When milo tells his fans to sexually harass women on his birthday, they respond “he didn’t really mean it! Lighten up!”. When he suggests women in STEM should be limited to 10 or 15%, they say “it was just a joke! He’s not a misogynist!” and laugh at all the people taking it seriously.
There’s no real limit to this. It could turn up that one of Trump’s cabinet picks has actually said “I agree with hitler” or “we should wipe out the jews”, and people would still defend him. This isn’t up for debate- countless internet conservatives have said things like this already, and yet we still have legions of people who don’t consider themselves anti-semites or racists lining up to defend them.
This leads to a really sickening mentality. The tumblr alt-right’s reaction to the current stream of articles about them is basically “Ha ha, this article about how nazism is experiencing an unprecedented resurgence and LGBT people, Jews, and Muslims fear for their lives said Richard Spencer is the leader of the movement, when it’s actually completely decentralized! Hilarious!”
And of course this is all richly flavored with the traditional reactionary bitter ironies. They expect us to ignore all the terrible things they’ve said because “it’s just a joke”, yet they insist that everyone who’s ever said “kill all men” was 100% serious. They adopted “facts over feelings” as their rallying cry, yet the ultimate fruit of their work is the post-truth world.
‘The goose-step, for instance, is one of the most horrible sights in the world, far more terrifying than a dive-bomber. It is simply an affirmation of naked power; contained in it, quite consciously and intentionally, is the vision of a boot crashing down on a face. Its ugliness is part of its essence, for what it is saying is ‘Yes, I am ugly, and you daren’t laugh at me’, like the bully who makes faces at his victim.’
– Orwell, The Lion and the Unicorn
This is why making fun of nazis with anime avatars, while entertaining, never phases them because anime avatar or not these people have no shame. They wear their embarassing symbolism proudly so that you can’t hurt them for pointing it out.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I’ve been starting to keep tabs on neo-Nazi sites (which is horrifying but somebody needs to do it) and the first thing I’ve noticed is that everything’s shrouded in 1000 layers of irony to the point that no matter what they say or how wrong they are about anything, they can claim that they were joking or trolling or got you good. It’s a bizarre and effective defense to any kind of criticism.
This combined with a complete refusal to see the hypocrisy in whining about anything the left jokes about makes them impossible to argue with, so don’t bother. They should all simply be rejected as terrible people.
This, yes, but I would like to add: when so many minds are poisoned meat, we have to work that much harder to show the light in the world. It’s a privilege to be able to recognise what is truly dark and horrible – some, as pointed out here – might only see the ‘joke.’ The opposite has to be built up, has to be spread to keep pushing the dark back, keep drawing the poison out.
President Obama said we had until Thanksgiving to mourn.
Now it’s November 26 and you and I and all of us are elbow-deep in feelings but it’s Time To Get To Work.my dear and brilliant friend @rowanellis made you a guide to get started, so if you felt even the least bit of a collapsing in your chest on the night of November 8th, if I saw you write even one sad tweet, if you instagrammed yourself at a single trump protest, if by god you donated to jill stein’s cage-free organic recount jamboree because you were hoping beyond hope that you could make this go away,
i had better. see. you. do. the. things.

He’s laying the groundwork for restricted access to the presidency.
He’s only going to let those who will write what he wants speak to his administration.
We’re only going to be reading and watching propaganda and expect real journalists to be starved out, fired, sued and smeared by the remaining press.
We already have laws on the books that make it illegal for journalists/cameras to go on farms to investigate how unsanitary they are, and their human rights and animal cruelty violations. How much easier will it be to concoct some “threat to national security” that necessitates restricted access to government?
Update: The New York Times said they didn’t even know the meeting with Trump was cancelled until they saw his tweet this morning. “We did not change the ground rules and made no attempt to.”
Holy shit, this is terrifying
Never stop speaking out. Never stop making noise.
Back up the good journalists/papers/media outlets that understand there can be no neutrality on this point.
Never stop speaking out.

She’s defending Nazis, we understand
Actual, proper Nazis.
My God.
Go fuck yourself, Ann Coulter.
She was comparing Nazis who murdered approximately FIVE MILLION Jews to a black minister.
She’s always been awful, and media who use her for ratings and triggering their audiences should be thoroughly condemned if not shunned altogether.
As Christiane Amanpour said, media can no longer be neutral about these issues. We can’t keep giving ‘validation’ to those who would destroy all that is good in the world.
According to the New York Times, Spencer – who claims to have coined the term “alt-right” – “railed against Jews and, with a smile, quoted Nazi propaganda in the original German. America, he said, belonged to white people … As he finished, several audience members had their arms outstretched in a Nazi salute.” The crowd joined Spencer in a cry of “Heil victory!”
And yet, still, headlines were tentative. The New York Times gesticulated wildly toward Nazism without actually using the word (“Alt-Right Exults in Donald Trump’s Election With a Salute: ‘Heil Victory’”), and a CNN panel managed to avoid saying “Nazi” entirely, despite discussing a chyron that read, “Alt-right founder questions if Jews are people.”
But if declaring the superiority of the white race, quoting Nazi propaganda, calling for “peaceful ethnic cleansing”, and provoking Nazi salutes from his audience isn’t enough to qualify one as a neo-Nazi, then where on earth is the bar? What is the hesitation? And, given the close ties between the “alt-right” and Trump’s cabinet, how is the top story on every front page not some version of “NEO-NAZIS ATTEMPTING TO SEIZE CONTROL OF AMERICAN GOVERNMENT”?
White nationalists? Alt-right? If you see a Nazi, say Nazi | Lindy West | Opinion | The Guardian (via brutereason)
Neo-nazis on Twitter are all over this: it was ‘ironic,’ ‘not meant to be taken seriously.’ Oh, so this is laughable, then, a joke?
In Germany, the sieg heil salute is illegal. Doesn’t take much thinking to find out why.
If the media bothered to look up the neo-nazis on Twitter alone, they’d have a richer understanding of what is going on and how ugly it really is.
Call them what they are. To know a thing’s true name is to have power over it.
They’re nazis, media. Nazis.
