You will die. You will not live forever. Nor will any man nor any thing. Nothing is immortal. But only to us is it given to know that we must die. And that is a great gift: the gift of selfhood. For we have only what we know we must lose, what we are willing to lose… That selfhood which is our torment, and our treasure, and our humanity, does not endure. It changes it is gone, a wave on the sea. Would you have the sea grow still and the tides cease, to save one wave, to save yourself?
Since starting chemo, my sister’s lungs keep filling up with fluid, dangerous to drain off since it requires tapping in to do it (risk of infection). They drained five litres today. The worry is her heart is not pumping efficiently so now there is that on top of everything else. Everyone is feeling overwhelmed and she is so serene about it all.
Out of words today. Take care, everyone.
hey im torn on this Black Lightning thing bc i think asking queer ppl who called the cw out b4 and left, to go back is like asking us to go back n forgive our abuser bc they’re offering something better now. There’s a whole movement on about abuse rn so i’m like lexa when blood does not have blood its ok if its my ppl who bleed??
I don’t think giving support to this show means going back to an abuser. I think it means we’re giving support for the people who write/make it so we can see more of it, so we can pressure entities like the CW to change and not be abusers, to force them to build better things, to take representation seriously. From what I’ve seen/heard Black Lightning looks like a genuine offering.
I think it’s probably very easy to turn this into some kind of pain Olympics, but that’s wasteful and doesn’t help. I’ve seen fans who would happily return to the CW if they made Lexa live again on The 100 – will those same fans support programming like Black Lightning? If queer fans stay away is it that much easier for programmers to say ‘oh, we tried to engage them but it didn’t work, so no more of that.’ You can bet anything there’s someone trying to work that angle just so they don’t have to offer anything. We can’t let that thinking win.
When those content creators get through that door, whether it’s Black Lightning or The Bold Type or One Day at a Time, you know they had to work 100x harder than anyone else. There’s good people out there doing their very best to bring this. Focus on them. The system will bend and change if we make it. I think this is a way.
I’m barely here anymore, but I hope everyone is doing okay.
Larry Nassar Sentenced To Up To 175 Years In Prison By Michigan Judge
npr:
Larry Nassar, the USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor who has admitted to abusing patients in his care, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison.
“I just signed your death warrant,” said Judge Rosemarie Aquilina on Tuesday afternoon in the Lansing, Mich., courtroom.
Aquilina allowed scores of accusers to give victim impact statements during the sentencing.
Nassar had already been sentenced to 60 years in prison on separate federal child pornography charges.

This is a post that has so much it wants to say about those I love who are hurting right now but it doesn’t know how to say it, so it’s just going to sit here and hope for the best – for all of us.
This is on my dash quite a bit: a lack of support of shows like Black Lightning because networks like the CW are racist/homophobic (past behaviour/people in charge) and have hurt audiences (without consequences).
There are people who will use this as an excuse for their own racism, that’s just a fact. Is it what it all boils down to? No. But racism is a huge factor in not supporting this. I get the tug of war some have. There’s more to it, yes. As part of the queer audience, I get where the resentment comes from (and I know how angry some people are toward this network). But we’ve asked others to get over theirs to support us. We have to do better. We have to keep challenging our privilege. We’re not going to win anything if we don’t support one another and support representation. We’ve got to bring the margins to the fore. Isn’t this part of how we do it?
There’s so much we despise about this system/that network and it does need to be addressed, but where are we on that? We’re still watching telly. Let’s make it count for something.
Adding here TV Grim Reaper’s ratings post. I don’t think international viewers affect this, and I don’t think this includes streaming views, either.

For the anon who requested a favourite line from literature – there are so many and told so often, I don’t want to be cliche about it.
So I had a think and I believe this is truly one of the finest.
“Sneakers with formalwear is fine for Ellen but not for lesser gays like you,” Anya says flatly.
Yes, fan fiction is literature and @femininenachos Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl would be Jane Austen’s favourite story if she were alive today.
